... more on PC-11 (BOHICA comes to mind):

North American specification update - March 2015

"Concern over technology changes and back serviceability for PC-11

One of the drivers for oils with 800 ppm phosphorus is to give those marketers that require it, the ability to add an API S claim for universal oil for gasoline engines.

However, at the January NCDT meeting, Ford presented data showing that a premium PC-11 capable oil, designed at 800 ppm phosphorus, did not perform well in a smaller 6.7 litre diesel engine calling for an API CJ-4 engine oil. Ford felt that the reduction in ZDDP from ~1200 ppm phosphorus to 800 ppm was too large a change. In their view significantly more field testing would be required for them to be assured that these oils will not cause issues in older and even some current production engines."

Keep in mind the EPA would be all too happy if you toast your old diesel engine becasue then you'd have to buy a new one at the current emission level. Educate yourself and hide your wallet!

Naw, they'd never do that ! ;)

Do you really believe the U.S. EPA is driving the emissions changes? Europe is putting pressure on the U.S. To follow their upcoming change to Stage 5. Japan is already using engines with tighter restrictions than the U.S. In small diesels. Even China would like to get there but their infrastructure is too antiquated to handle the better engines so instead the people wear masks to protect their lungs on the worst days. America is actually rather loose on their requirements compared to most of the first world countries. So oil spec - can somebody please post the EPA regulation that specifies what an engine oil used in a Tier 4 final engine must use? EPA śpecs the final emissions and does limit sulfur in diesel, but CJ-4 is a spec developed by the engine and oil companies as a requirement in meeting the emissions spec. You guys hit me at another bad time because this evening I learned of another schoolmate diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, a non-smoker who spent his career in our mines. Diesel soot? Dust particles? Nothing is for certain except that our miners suffer lung cancer at a rate 5 times higher than the standard population. Everybody has to go sometime but coughing blood out of your lungs gasping your last breaths?

Sorry to hear about your friend. I pray for his healing, comfort for the family and wisdom for the doctors.

To answer your question, yes. If you read all those links, you'll see the changes are mandated by the Govt.

Don't worry Tier 5 is on it's way for the U.S. Because Tier 4 was not successful in stopping Diesel engine sales. Tier 6 is a possibility after Tier 5.

The story goes that if you will purchase lube oil in a 55 gallon drum. Shell will sell the good stuff, the old spec CI-4plus Rotella, not the wimpy CJ-4 Rotella in today's stores .
