That was trully novel. I've used my truck for all sorts of things but never used it to remove a filter.
Where are you? It sounds kinda close to my neck of the woods. Never know when I might need help getting a filter off.

Hey there. I am in the Sierra Nevada foothills about 50 miles east of Fresno Ca - about 15 miles west of the entrance to Kings Canyon National Park. We had tried about everything we could think of to get the filter off and the guy was ready to give up - but I wanted the filter changed out so suggested the pick up chain idea. I have had dumb ideas before (ask my wife - she was particularly skeptical about my idea for solving the problem where a cow's horn was turned down and growing into the side of the face). Some of my dumb ideas work and some . . .well not so much. But the chain and pick up idea worked instantly. Since then I have done my own servicing and have not had a problem getting the filters off - always spread some clean oil on the new filters though - I think that makes a big difference.

Think it would be wise to try to loosen the filter on a brand new tractor before heat and time makes it way harder to remove? Maybe just try to back them off a little by a method that doesn't damage them? Seems like it would and they would be easier to budge.

I'm sure that would improve the odds. Whether it's worth worrying about would be another question.

How about before it leave the dealer's lot, they loosen and/or replace it? Or, that ought to be 'dealer prep' item...Mine was a turkey to get off (did an oil change @ 10 hrs) - had to use the screw-driver method

The Mitsu S3L2 engines in the Max26 and the 1526 generally do not have painted on filters. The 1533/38 do, and I agree with DickFoster that the paint makes it tougher to remove the filter initially. But with the correct assortment of tools, it's generally not too tough. On the Max26, it's just pretty tight in that area with the loader installed. Seems the filter engineers did not talk to the loader engineers....

I have had a number of new Cummins equipped pickups over the years, and the initial filter removal is no fun on them either. Nor is the placement of the filter on the 6.7 engines.

I say this with due respect. If paint is the factor that stops me from removing a filter, I'm using the wrong tool.
