I just changed the oil and filter on my CK25 about 10 hours ago now. I checked the oil today before using it and it was a 1/2" higher up the dip stick. I was a little shocked and worried. Am I having diesel blowing by the rings? Most of my jobs lately have been 30 minutes or less. Are all the starts and stops on the engine allowing diesel to settle in the oil pan? Should I assume it is diesel, I don't know of an oil lab nearby and the cost would probably equal an oil change?

Did you smell it? IF there is diesel in the oil you should be able to smell it.

Could be diesel and could also be coolant.

Diesel would be less damaging than coolant which could scrap your engine.
Determine which B4 putting more hours on that tractor.

OR-- Could you have simply put in more oil than necessary--relying on dipstick while filling? if so oil was not totally settled when you took the reading while filling.

Coolant contamination would suggest a blown head gasket and fuel suggests a gasket or seal at injector pump area.
Over filling oil wold not be serious but best to drain some off. For a true dipstick reading it takes a while for all the oil to settle. Also hot oil will read a bit higher on the dipstick. Cold oil will take some time to all drain down. (was it cold when you did the change?)

I think you just overfilled it. If it was cold out, the oil would take longer to settle as Piloon said. But...verify for sure.

Normal Diesel oil will be almost pure black. Coolant should give the oil a dark milky color. If so, don't run the engine (except for diagnosis) until it's fixed.

Diesel in the oil is less dangerous, but still not good. You should indeed be able to smell Diesel in the oil if that's the problem. Another poster with this problem discovered the fuel lift pump (the cheap one) had an internal leak allowing fuel to enter the crankcase. The injection pump (the expen$ive one) is lubricated by engine oil but I doubt the engine would even run with a serious fuel leak in the IP.

Be sure you are not just seeing normal oil drainback into the pan. Especially with synthetics, it can take a long time for all the oil to drain from the engine into the oil pan.

It is always best to check your oil when the engine is stone cold. Or first thing BEFORE you start it for the day.

Get a clean white paper towel & lay it flat. Put a drop of your engine oil on it and wait a couple min. Look at the spot and if it has a wide clear ring around the dark oil spot you have coolant in there. As stated, use your calibrated nose to smell for fuel in the oil.

Btw, you have to do this when the oil is hot.

I don't know if your hydraulic pump is direct mounted to the engine but that also is a suspect for oil rising in the pan. The only one that is immediately harmful is antifreeze and you can crack you oil drain plug to test that. If you have antifreeze leak out you are in trouble. I would guess like most have stated you probably just overfilled it. CJ

as the other posted.

check other sumps to see if any are low.

if you are lucky, you just overfilled.

If you just overfilled it, you need to remove the excess oil that is above the full point. Running with too much oil is bad for the engine and could blow some oil seals.
Check for contaminates as described but after determining that no anti-freeze or diesel is in it, drain off the excess oil.
