You need to talk to Tommy at Affordable, especially before you go tearing your engine apart. I'm surprised he hasn't weighed in yet, I'm sure this is something he's seen before.

I'm still leaning toward an inadequate oil pump. I'm trying to think of a diagnostic test you can perform to check it.

I looked at my old pump today and actually broke it down, it's sad that on startup before I replaced the pump I had more pressure than what I have now. I guess it's possible that the internal bypass may not be adjusted properly on my new pump. I'm thinking whenever I drop the oil pan I'll replace the impeller and pump body with the old one.

Other than excessive metal shavings is there any other telltale signs that the main bearings are bad?

Yes. You need to communicate straightforwardly with someone well versed and experienced in these tractors.

It's a gear pump, so as long as its turning it should be pumping oil,you can test the pump by connecting a drill to the top put the pump in a bucket of oil spin it with the drill.Low oil pressure with a new pump my guess would be excessive wear on the bearings, prob. not what you want to hear.I will say I have seen a lot of these tractors with 30 psi when its cold to 5psi when its warm/hot and it is still pumping enough oil to the top of the engine for lubrication.

.
I agree with Tommy
If it was my tractor, I would pull the valve cover and start the engine when it was cold and see how much oil is getting to the rocker assemblies, then run it till it's good and hot and check the amount of oil to the rockers. If the rockers are getting oil, then I'd run it and maybe plan on an overhaul when the time and money is available.

Replacing the main bearings on Monday, does anyone know what the bolts need to be torqued to?

Tommy will know that. ... Have you checked those bearing clearances - mains and rods - and determined they are worn beyond spec? Did you check "cheek" clearance on both?
,,,,,Or are you just replacing them because its inexpensive and fairly easy?

The crank journals and bearings need to be measured to KNOW the clearances instead of throwing parts at the tractor and hoping for the best.
