Can you pick up the shavings with a magnet? This is important.

For one thing, you shouldn't have any metal shavings at all. None. Time to start digging.
Define size, shape and makeup of "shavings". Flakes are babbit plating. Bad news. ... Tiny metal specs, almost flour texture can be there without issue from the agitated "rinse" of the raw casting and from ring/ cyl wall breakin.

YES - few, all magnetic. And no flakes.

There should only be trace iron particles, detected only through oil analysis not the naked eye. Could be excessive liner wear at 1200 hrs. from dirty oil, but that's a lot if you can see it.

At 1200 hrs. (six oil/filter changes) all break in is long gone. Even during break in you wouldn't actually see the particles. There is something ongoing. It's possible to have a spun bearing. These bearing inserts are steel, and could be lined with tin or copper and an aluminum overlay of about .00015" as the bearing face. A spectrographic oil analysis would reveal exactly what the particles are, along with any fuel or coolant cross contamination, but that a moot point now.

Footnote: I change oil by analysis. It costs me $25 every 200 hours. I currently have over 600 hours on the oil, and it is still very good with no measurable cross contamination, low soot, and high TBN.

I'll check it with a magnet whenever I drop the pan, there wasn't massive amounts of shavings or anything like that, I just kinda assumed it was normal due to the oil pan having never been pulled before and unless I drained on a slope I wouldn't get 100% of the oil out. I was also thinking about using some type of screen or strainer whenever I drain the oil to see if I could catch anything. The piece that I remember finding was stuck to the bottom of the old oil pump strainer I'm pretty sure it was aluminum because of how pliable it was, the size may have been around the tip of a ink pen maybe a little larger.

Magnetic drain plugs are best.

Removed the valve cover today, everything looked good top side. Hopefully I'll have time next weekend to drop the oil pan and start checking everything out underneath.

Well, that's kinda good news but you can't see what damage has been done, if any, to the rocker arm bushings from dirty oil.
