Howdy, Neighbor! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I am not much of a hockey fan, but, would like to see the ‘canes do well only because, well, they’re local - sorry. However, there are others around here more than making up for me being a “passive” fan. Have a lot of Northerners around here that LOVE their hockey – believe they are more fanatic than us Tarheel & dookie fans.

Was kinda funny when the ‘canes were playing Buffalo. There was concern here that the ‘canes may lose the home court, er, excuse me, home ice, advantage with all the New York transplants – don’t think it ever happened – but the hockey fans sure are loyal. I respect that. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

This is a HUGE news event around here. Every news media outlet, paper, radio, TV, etc. has something about the Stanley cup Finals – usually the leading story. My home page is one of the local TV stations and when I opened my browser this AM there was an article about the governor calling a news conference to discuss Hurricane preparedness. I thought, OK, this is getting out of control, but, it was the REAL hurricanes, not hockey; forgot that June is the start of hurricane season for us down here in “hurricane alley”. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Yes, I saw in the paper, where the local and state/province governments had the bets going – always get a kick out of that. Other night one of the news programs showed the Raleigh city council (I think it was) enjoying the Buffalo wings sent from the Buffalo city council after the series loss. I thought beer was odd though???? We are not known for our beer here, at least I didn’t think we were?? There are a ton of micro-breweries around and we have several big colleges that are known for (surprise, surprise) consuming large quantities of beer - along with a collegiate beer drinking team (also known as the the dook lacrosse team /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif sorry, know that was a low-blow but I could not help myself! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif ) But you are right, from what little I know about hockey, beer is a good bet.

I was thinking a more appropriate bet would be good ol' North Carolina Barbecue, Eastern style (boy, did I just set off a debate/flame-war!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif ) against some good Canadian back bacon.

Good luck!

In the area of N.C where I live (central), does not seem to be that much of a following of the series (or hockey in general for that matter).

Fact is, in N.C, most of the "youth" don't have the chance to go out and put on their ice skates to "get into the game" growing up.

Only been in N.C for five years now (damm yankee), the only comparison I can draw is that hockey is to Canada like what basketball is to N.C.

When I used to drink, it was however much easier to play hockey on a lake in the winter "with a couple in me" than to shoot hoops in the hot sun /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Come to think of it, interesting that Canada has produced one/some of the greatest in hocky as well with N.C in basketball (rookie of the year in the NBA this year is from about 15 minutes from my place).

I'll go out on a limb. Canada "is" hockey. It would be a shame for Canada to lose to N.C. in hockey.

I've got to pipe in here
first off hockey is a growing cult sport especially in the urban/suburban areas of the warmer states.
how do I know this? youth hockey!
USA hockey is the governing body of youth hockey in the lower 48 states, and they direct the youth national champion tournaments. These tournament classifications are for both boys and girls, based on age and skill level.
To get to the national championship tournament a team must, win their instate district tourny
win their state tourny
then you go to the USA national championship tourny for your classification. there is over 30 different classification
and in 2005-06
tier I
boys 12 & under, national champs: Dallas Ice Jets
boys 16 & under, national champs; L A selects
tier II
boys 12 & under, national champs; Santa Clare Blackhawks
boys junior C, national runnerups; Virginia Statemen

girls 16 & under, national runnerups; Cal, Selects
girls senior C, natioal runnerups; Tampa Bay Elite

I've been involved with hockey/youth hockey a long time
and 20 year ago it was very rare to see a team from a warm weather state period other than Texas or CA
also one of my boys went to a summer youth hockey camp at Miami of Ohio U. 3 years straight, we met alot of boys and parents from KY and TN there. This is no learn to skate camp, this was for boys that knew how to play and wanted to push it up couple notches
Nashville TN appears to have some major youth hockey programs, because they are alway advertising and direct calling for teams to go there for local fun tournaments
anyway,
...... Edmonton is done!! Canes in 5 , maybe 6 Naw 5
I've watched less then 10 minutes of game 1, and none of game 2,
it's baseball season!! kids are playing, I'm a asistant coach, Tigers were winning, Wife is bi&?%'ing get the boat out

I can only speak for my surroundings "in the south". Anyone who I talk to that has a southern "dialect" (sp?), NASCAR, yeah boy! Basketball, either you're for Duke or the Tarheels, Bass fihsing, turkey hunting gets you in a conversation. Say "hockey" and you get a blank look.

Since I now live in N.C, my ice skates stayed up north with my father along with my snowboard.
