Oilers vs Hurricanes

only 3 players from the 1980 olympic team played at all in the NHL and only 1 stayed for a career
only 12% of the players in the NHL are american born
10 years ago it was 6%
over 70% of 1A collage scholarships go to Canadian players
years ago if you were a skilled, promising determined young teenager with an eye on collage or pro hockey you would need to leave home at say 14 and play in the canadian youth leagues, then play canadian juniors. Then get drafted or awarded a scholarship.
This is slowly changing MN has a outstanding High schools hockey program

and by the way , how can anyone be considered overpaid if someone is willing pay you, recruit you to come to his team

Since I refuse to go attend any professional sporting events, and really don't watch sports on T.V, figure I could call them overpaid! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I do however think that hockey is one of the most demanding sports to learn and play.

Thinking about this, it hit me that professional sports athletes (sp?) are more of an entertainer than anything else. Thats why I suppose they can get paid what they do, because people are willing to pay to watch them.

Sigarms,
Good points - I agree with you in regards to watching people play for the "love of the game and competition" vs. a paycheck. Heck, I enjoy watching my nephew's little league and JV basketball games more than pros - definitely more than pro basketball.

Also, understand my "shame" comment was in direct support of what you were saying. As disheartening as a loss would be for Canada in their national sport to a North Carolina team, they should be proud of the fact that the 'canes had to win with Canadian players - trying to find a little silver lining. No knocks, dis-respect, criticism or cynicism (sp?) intended with that comment.

Now, on the other hand, the Nascar comment was a Southern-by-the-grace-of-God all in fun dig at a dang yankee /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. I couldn't resist that because your NASCAR/fishing/basketball/turkey-hunting comment was true (for the record, I do not hunt /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif).

Edmonton is feeling a little better this morning. A 2-1 series sure seems better than what a 3-0 would have been. It was a pretty good game. It's a good thing the Oilers won, or the referee who blew the whistle on the "goal that was no goal" would have been carried out of town /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Jussi played very well, after letting in 5 last game. Nice to see he can stand up and fill the gap.

Hopefully the Oil can win again on Monday to tie it up.

Well the Oil lost last night. It was not a good game. I don't understand how we can play so poorly on the power play. We are 1 for 25. That is horrible! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

The game was close, but that doesn't really help too much. Could it all be over on Wednesday in Raleigh? Hope not!
