Field mechanic I used to work with had a 4lb hammer welded to his bumper to give the impression he had forgot to put it up, but going down the road no one would tailgate him because they thought it might fall off, and they were always pulling up beside him trying to motion that he had something on his bumper. Pretty funny.
That is funny. I knew an elderly gent that rode a big touring bike, I think it was a Goldwing or something. Anyway, he always had 3 or four steelies about 1" in diameter that he would casually drop on the road when someone was tailing him real close. They would invariably bounce onto the tailgater's car and cause some real damage. He thought that was a real hoot until he deployed his deterrent on an unmarked patrol car. He ended up in some real trouble over this stunt, deservedly so. I'm glad he got caught before he ended up killing someone. He should have affixed something to the bike in a precarious posistion to achieve the same effect.

I have a very large Wilton vise bolted to the back bumper of my mobile service van (18 foot cube van). You would be supprised how many times I get people waving me down telling me I left something on the bumper. Pull over just to find it's the vise that is a permanent part of the truck.

I like the hammer idea though. Might have to weld one to the bumper of my beater pickup.

As for packaging, one of the first that I remeber was a 5th becoming a liter.

Dane

Maybe I'm dating myself, but I remember my dad telling about a quart becoming a fifth. This stuff has been going on for a long time.

edit: I just checked a conversion chart. 1 gallon is 3.785 liters. Therefore 1 liter is .26 gallons, more than a fifth.

I buy my bourbon by the Texas fifth (half gallon).

Is that a 1.75 L at the liquor store or do you get it in a mason jar from a local "private" distiller?

Unfortunantly, the "fifth" you buy now is only 750ml which is only 3/4 of a liter.

Maybe with the food products, they went to a metric measurement first and still slap the old standard numbers on for the one and only country that still uses the most archaic system of units on earth. Notice how much of the new machines today are metric be it bolts or sizes?

Check the label on a 5 gallon paint bucket....4 gallons 3 pints and some odd ounces. Noticed on both Glidden and Behr brands.

I'm going to Home Depot to buy a welder for my hammer.

I'm finishing up a project and bought most of the material at the Depot. I came up short a couple of 2x4's and went to the local mom and pop lumber yard (only one in town). Exelent service, paid, went around back, picked em up, guy helped me load and everything. Holy crap, $ 3.80 each ! Only $ 2.00 each at Depot.

I'd like to see a copy of thier biz plan, theres a new Lowes about a 1/2 mile up the road that should open in about 2 weeks

The higher prices are not usually the case. The local lumber yard or hardware stores in this area have prices in the same range as the box stores, but much better service.

Most people have it ingrained into their heads that prices must be cheaper if it comes from a big box. I have found that's it's worth paying slightly more from the small store to avoid the crowded junk-filled aisles, long checkout lines, poor product knowledge by the help, and having to sort lumber for 20 minutes to find two decent 2x4's.

Its the last part of what you said that I can really relate too. Funny thing is, most "box store" lumber people haven't a clue what is a good board and what is bad. A bow in a board and they toss it when all it was was a crown. The real problem is how they leave the lumber trashed and not stacked, this is so detrimental to green lumber. I use my local lumber store when I need lumber as often as possible. If nothing else, its just more fun....

PS: they have guys that restack and cover the lumber every day and more at my local lumber yard. I appreciate that and do my part to help them out.
