Sorry, I did not aim that statement at you and didn't specifically recall reading your remark. It's just a phrase I hear every time home defense comes up. The tone was a little strong but please don't take it personally.
To hear me racking a shotgun, the perp is going to have to be in my house already, at the same time as me and my family. In that case we are well past the stage of audible deterrents.
I don't keep a round in the chamber and that bothers me, but I do have a little girl. I choose to err in favor of safety although I'll concede it will cost me milliseconds I might not have to spare in an emergency. If I ever really need the gun I will have to rack it, but it will not be for sound effects.
Come to think of it, would a meth head who has entered my home in the night with cars in the driveway actually be deterred by the sound of a weapon cocking? He is likely more prepared for the confrontation than I am, being wide awake and house-breaking and all. I will just be telling him where I am and what I have.
