Hey I didn't say there was anything "Magic"...

Sorry, I did not aim that statement at you and didn't specifically recall reading your remark. It's just a phrase I hear every time home defense comes up. The tone was a little strong but please don't take it personally.

To hear me racking a shotgun, the perp is going to have to be in my house already, at the same time as me and my family. In that case we are well past the stage of audible deterrents.

I don't keep a round in the chamber and that bothers me, but I do have a little girl. I choose to err in favor of safety although I'll concede it will cost me milliseconds I might not have to spare in an emergency. If I ever really need the gun I will have to rack it, but it will not be for sound effects.

Come to think of it, would a meth head who has entered my home in the night with cars in the driveway actually be deterred by the sound of a weapon cocking? He is likely more prepared for the confrontation than I am, being wide awake and house-breaking and all. I will just be telling him where I am and what I have.

No offense taken, just debating the point on it's merits.
I wouldn't leave a loaded gun, round chambered or not within reach of a child. They are just too clever at getting into things when you’re not looking.
Having the weapon close at hand in your bedroom, as that is where you are most likely to be when an intruder enters, with ammo or a magazine ready to load is in my view the best you can be prepared with all around safety in mind. You certainly don't want it locked in a safe in the basement while you and yours are upstairs while the intruders are on the ground floor.

Since statistics show it will be a friend or most likely relative that will kill you, best to be armed at all times.

As far as the "'tard" label, can we ever get away from this PC stuff? I'm sure ANYTHING said can be offensive to someone. I think folks should "get over it"! :2cents:

I will not say what I really want to say because I may get a E-Mail from the moderater. But I will ask this. How far down the list of insults and derogatory jibes is acceptable?

Are you referring to farmgirl19's post or the term "tard"? As far as I know, little is set in stone, so if something offends a member they can report it to the moderator, say so on the thread or if thy with handle it by private message. I have done the PM thing or voiced my objection on the thread several times but never reported anything yet.

I'm not sure what you are asking. As a blonde, female, tomboy, tractor nut, I have been the brunt of many remarks and jokes through the years. I think one needs to move beyond worrying about "labels" and being offended. Maybe Mae West was right, so many years ago. "Those who can be shocked, should be shocked more often!" If one wants to wear their feelings on the sleeve, and get offended at terms and names, I still say, GET OVER IT!

I'm not very smart (I know, I know...I've proven it over and over), but...it does seem that we all enjoy (myself included) a reason to get all pizzed off...very quickly.

A sign of the "internet-age"?

Not aimed at you. But in general I see a trend back to the time of not caring that "words mean something". A term that Rush Limbaugh uses quite often although he can jab someone without being specific. I am not a fan of his. I hear it when I'm watching my grand daughters fastpitch games. The sidelines are full of people commenting on ethnicity, gender, people in wheelchairs, assumptions of guilt by association, long hair, short hair etc.... The narrow mindedness of some individuals to the point of not seeing anything else.

The likes and dislikes of each of us is why we can have a discussion on TBN. If we didn't have preferences there would be no reason to have a forum on different tractors or guns or anything for that matter. But then again if we get too testy about our choice or criticism of brands or individuals on then we get the TALK about the TBN guidelines. As it shoud be.
