older tractor, new pump= blew up in my face

pretty sure this has loader mounted valve. seemed like the 3 PT hitch was no issue to lift, but can't say we held it at it's extreme position whilepressure built up.

I can see I'll need pics to help, and I'll try to post soon. I don't know what a pressure relief valve would look like. How many possibilities are there?, and can somebody post pics on what type of PRV they'd expect to find on a set up like mine?

Please get someone to look at it before you even start it up again.

With the relief valve either missing or malfunctioning, hydraulic pressure can go very high, very fast.

The up side of this is that you may have found the real reason for selling, and get a pretty good machine out of it with nothing more than a new pressure relief valve.

Another possibility to consider is that the new pump has a greater hydraulic output than the original and a PRV may be present, but undersized for the pump.

2 Folks (at least) have suggested using a gauge to measure pressure on the lines. This makes 3. See what is happening - My 806 IH runs around 2500 psi. steve

Did the hydraulics work before you bought it? Did you change anything on the tractor? Perhaps someone adjusted the relief valve the wrong way, if it has a relief valve. Even if you had a gage, if you don't know about hydraulics, it will not help much, although someone might be able to install the gage and diagnose the problem for you. Did you say the 3pt worked normally?

the hydraulics worked before I bought, but were low on oil. I tightened one leaky fitting (that I now suspect acted as the pressure relief), otherwise I didn't touch the hydraulics.the 3pt seems to work fine, ALTHOUGH.... I did NOT lift or drop to the full extension and then hold it there to see what would happen. It seems to build up pressure on the FEL when you hold the control in position, after the bucket or boom is at it's furthest point.

my neighbour also suggested the pressure test. He also came over while I was gone watching Superbowl. He phoned to say I should flush all the fluid and clean out every line and blow air through them. he said sometimes there are screens that get plugged up and that any contaminent or dirt in hydraulics is bad. He also thought some of my lines may be rated lower PSI strength than what my pump puts out. Also, he said there was no PRV.

About the the only explanation for not having a PRV, is that if the FEL valve was replaced, they did not realize there was no PRV in the replacement valve . However, if things are blowing a part, that is a clue in itself that something is not right. You have to wonder if the previous owner new something was wrong and just wanted to get rid of it. You acan add a PRV to the system for about $40

There is a relief valve located in the housing that you put the oil in,normally the loader was hooked into the rear remotes that also has a relief,But most hackers cut the line and put the loader in series with the pump and some did not use a valve with a relief built into it.I suspect that is the way it was done because I have run across a few that was done this way.

As Kenstrac said there is a pressure relief valve. If you don't have a service manual you should be able to get some good info here http://www1.caseih.com/northamerica/PartsService/Pages/search.aspx

Under the search for parts title you can click to access the parts breakdown. Enter your tractor model and search. Lots of parts breakdowns; your relief valve should be found under "hydraulic system", "124 Hydraulic system, double acting auxiliary valve"

In the second picture, that looks like a needle valve. Is that a knob that you can turn? In the last picture, I bet there was some strain on that hose out of that cylinder. It should have had a 90 fitting installed there. Look on the broken hose and see if you can read the pressure ratng.
