I am trying to help put a 3 point bale spear on an Oliver 1850. All the adjustments we have made seem to not help. Either the spear is pointing up when trying to back into the bale, which will not let the bale spear penetrate the bale, or the spear is point down when fully raised, letting the bale fall off. We have tried shortening and lengthening the top link, and adjusting the lift arms. None of this seems to work. I was wondering if maybe the lift arms might not be the right length, because the bale will raise but when it gets almost to the top that is when the bale leans back.

Sounds like you are using a catagory I spear, on a catagory II hitch on the 1850.

Measure the distance from where the front of the lift arms attach on the 1850, to the top link attaching hole. Should be about 24" for a catagory II. Betting the attaching pins, to top link measurement on the spear will be about 18", which is catagory I.

If this is the case, you just need to extend the top link height on the spear 6 inches, or make a bracket to lower where the top link attaches to the tractor about 6 inches.

Ditto that.

Only way for the spear to be tipping down when raising is toplink is closer to the lift arms @ the spear than it is at the tractor.

IF they were equal height, the spear would be level throughout the raise.

If the spear was closer at the tractor side, it would tip up when raising.

Do you have more than one place to mount the toplink on the tractor side?? If so, make sure you are using the lowest mounting hole.

If not, you need to modify something like DJ54 said.
