Don - what kind of bag crete are you using? Last weekend we mixed and set an 8 X 10 X 4" thick slab addition to the well house. It was going to take near 40 bags of standard bag mix - but a fella at McCoys in Bastrop turned me onto some stuff called "maximizer" 1 cu ft per 80 lb bag ... sure cut down on the mixing and I see no difference in the end product. I hand mixed 22 bags - 2 at a time - in the tractor bucket then just dumped. (for those of you doing the math -- it wasn't quite 4" thick /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif) Bernice handled the water hose and the finishing trowel. ..... maybe what we need to do is get these girls together so you & I can just sit back with a bock and supervise /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Mike, I used utility bag crete at .6 cf per 80lb. Using the table on the bag to pour a 4" 80sf slab I would need 46 bags. You did good! This is the type of information I needed before. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Harvey, didn't you do a post on the maximizing concrete several years ago???

Whoa! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Your getting into a dangerous area here! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Don't worry as long as it's FIFO. When you go LIFO is when it's called Alzheimer's. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Hi Don,

If I need more than just a few sacks of concrete, than I go to United Rentals and buy it already mixed in their one yard buggies. Right now it's $110 a yard, but you can get it in half yard loads too.

One of the advantages is you get a stronger mix with larger rock in it. You can pour it all at ounce and get more uniform drying time and best of all, your not handleing 80 pound sacks of ready mix.

How many sacks equal a yard? When I'v figured out the math, it's also allot cheaper to buy it already mixed compared to the sacks. But if you want to save money, than you have to do it like Harey, and buy the materials in bulk and mix it yourself. For you job, I'd look into the buggies.

Eddie

Eddie, the one part of the equation you didn't tell us is how far that United Rentals is from your place? If you have to drive 50 to 100 miles roundtrip for a yard of concrete, then mixing onsite looks a lot more attractive. Too bad local concrete companies don't have the same service. I have one of those less than 10 miles from my house.
