The picture was taken about three weeks ago but the grass is still about as short. It is just starting to grow with the 1/2" weekly rains we are receiving.

James thanks for the picture of the screws!

We figured that there would be 16 poles in this project. The poles are to be 12' long with about 4' to 3 1/2' in the ground. The metal supplier I am using had no galvanized 2" pipe I found some 50 miles away but the price was almost double so we are going with "black" pipe.

The pipe in this project must have an outside diameter of 2 3/8" to fit the connectors.

The pipe came in 32' lengths. I had them cut into 10, 12 and 16 foot lengths and brought them home in my 10' trailer. For this project I built a pipe rack made from a bed frame to haul the 16' pipe. See attachment.

I then cut up 2 of the 10' poles into 2' sections to weld to the other 10' pipes to make 12' poles.

The Milwaukee Portable Band Saw, with a Milwaukee stand that the saw can be attached to with one bolt, worked great on cutting the poles. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I then welded the 2' section to the 10' sections.

The poles were welded with a MIG welder on the 110v setting. The welds will not show because that end of the pole will be underground. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

My #1 helper and quality control person /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif cleaned the pipes with lacquer thinner and painted the pipes with Harvey's special mixture of 1/2 Rust-oleum Rusty Metal Primer and 1/2 Rust-oleum Leather Brown paint.

My Dad and I picked up a bundle (48) of 4" C-purlins twenty feet long. I am really enjoying being retired WITH my Dad. We are both contributing to each others quality of life.

I also got a pallet, 42 bags, of ready mix concrete.

Harvey, here is my Inventory List of Framing materials:

16 - 12' - 2" poles
2 - 16' - 2"poles
1 - 2' - 2 7/8" pole
2 - 11' 2" poles (extra)
1 - 10' 2" pole (extra)

48 - 4" purlins - 20' long

42 bags of ready mix concrete.

Since everyone always want to know HOW MUCH, I will be adding the approximate cost of materials from my area.

Cost for poles and purlins $1,150.00
Cost for concrete $125.00

Harvey, I still need to get the screws. Can I order them or get them locally at Home Depot or TSC? How many and what size screws are needed for attaching your connectors to the purlins and the poles?

The placement of the poles on the North side and
South side will be - 7', 7', 7', 9'. On the West side and the interior wall the poles will be space 7' apart. the East side will be the open side.

To put a little blue in this thread (and because I don't have a PHD) my Day came by to drill the holes. We put a string where the exterior walls will be, evened out the diagonals, and drilled down about 3.5 to 4 feet deep.

Here is a picture of the carport building site as it sits now.

The two holes on the left are for a 9X12 porte-cochere for the golf cart.

Next on the agenda is to put up batter boards and string to get the exact placement of the poles in the 12" wide holes.

Looks like fun.

Let me know of you need some help one day, I'd love to make the drive down.

Don, I like that Milwaukee stand. I haven't see one of those before. It looks real handy. Would you mind telling us where you got it and how much it cost?

Thanks
James
