After 28 pages of this, I finally have something to add...Two words: Situational Awareness. See it...understand it...deal with it. At some point it all boils down to two things: Flee or Fight. As for me, I don't runs so good anymore...as for coyotes, I never met one I didn't want to kill....just because THEY never met anything THEY didn't want to kill...BobG in VA

I'm with BobG. We have a significant increase in our coyote population and I have a male unneutered dog. So on our beautiful property I need to keep him on a leash or risk very bad consequences.

That might turn me into a coyote hunter, although I've never hunted anything before. I am kind of interested if the .357 Henry rifle would be a good round for coyotes. I have a Henry .22 magnum and its a great rifle. A .357 lever action with a .357 revolver while on my property sounds like a combination that could deal with about anything.

How big are Coyotes where you live? Supposedly the eastern Coyotes are cross bred with Wolves and domestic dogs, so they are larger and less spooked by human activity. They are common sights in Boston now, they may even be on the harbor islands. A wandering coyote carrying a cat was spotted in Newton - The Boston Globe

If I had to carry a rifle, I’d want a rifle cartridge, even if it was a æœedium caliber like the .30 Carbine. Don’t think the terminal ballistics of .357 would be very good even out of a Carbine length barrel. Here’s a good article on the subject.
.357 Magnum

Go ahead and put me on that list too.

If a pistol caliber rifle (such as a .357) is carried, you'd probably be best off with hard cast bullets. Some of the Alaskan bush pilots carry large caliber revolvers and hard cast rounds seem to be the choice for bears.
I've just read this, no personal experience...

Your 22Mag. Henry would be all you would need...I use a 22-250 myself, but anything is better than nothing on coyotes....As a matter of fact, if you wound one..it might be better than killing it...the pack will never come to your location again as long as they survive...I killed a coyote in my side yard (I live on 34 acres surrounded by woods)..Used to hear the pack running at night..Haven't heard them since I killed that stupid sucker a year ago...BobG in VA

I am around Coyotes a lot. Saw two within 100yds today. I have a male dog that thinks he can whip anything. Got to see him tie into a coyote a couple years ago. By the time I could get my phone out of my pocket for a picture this is all I got. Dog running back to the tractor. Coyote saying "Are we done here?" All it wanted to do was leave. :)

Or maybe not if you are lucky. I found a 6mo old coy-dog in the woods and she turned out to be the best dog I ever had! Was shocked to hear it was half coyote when I took her to the vet to get her checked out. Vet said don’t keep her. Glad I didn’t listen. Finally had to put her down after 13 wonderful years of love.

It's supposed to be similar to a 30-30.

I have stainless Marlin 1894's in .41 (1894SS41-LTD) and .357 magnum.

Very fun to shoot.

Good stuff. Sorry for the loss. Hope you look forward to the next "best friend" you can find. :)
