open station vs cab

When I drive my Jeep or PU I like the window open a bit. Once, a while back, I got the "feeling" riding in a car full of people. I have no idea why I'd get the feeling in a cab tractor. There isn't much of anything thats more open. Believe me, when I get that feeling the only place to be is standing out in the middle of my lawn or some other wide open area. I think a lot has to do with getting all stuffed up and having difficulty breathing. Like right now - its 99 degrees outside and 8% relative humidity. I've also noticed as I have gotten older I'm definitely more affected by dust, pollen etc. My friend that I ride Harleys and drink Jack Daniels with says its all in my mind - he may be right.

When I bought this tractor I found out I was somewhat claustrophobic. They had two M6040s - one with & one without cab. I got in the cab, started it up and as I drove out to the "test field" I had an uncontrollable urge to either get out of the cab or at the least open the doors. Never been in a cab tractor before but I knew right off when I plowed snow in the winter its many times in a blinding snow storm and I wouldn't be able to control the tractor from outside the cab. I got the open station one.

All cabs are not created equal. If you, want a spacious high visibility cab go Case IH.

No, don't get me wrong. I like cab tractors and there are a lot of times when I wish mine had the cab. The dust here can get every bit as bad as anywhere and the snow going down the back of my neck as I go under the pine tree limbs full of snow down the driveway is - - well, just cold. But, I'm not going to spend an extra 8-10K just to find out that the cab won't work for me. Its just a lot easier to go open station and dress, at least, for the cold. The dust - well, I try to go up wind at all times - ha,ha.

Claustrophobia really doesn't "make sense" as it seems to vary from one person to the other and what bothers one won't bother another. My wife is claustrophobic and simply cannot wear a dust mask or motorcycle helmet with full face coverage even if it is just plastic but has no trouble wearing a Stihl loggers helmet. She can operate a cab or open station tractor or sit in a deer blind, but other closed in areas drives her out. If it bother you, it bothers you and not much you can do but live with it.

OK, you lost me on this one. A blinding snow storm is the best time to have a cab. Keep the wind off you and stay dry. Are you saying you decided on open station for visibility, choosing that over the protection? I don't understand the "I wouldn't be able to control the tractor from outside the cab" statement at all. Why would you need to control it from outside?:confused3:

I have not driven a cabbed tractor that much until the last few years...
My dad bought a used Allis Chalmers 8050 to bush hog with about 10 years ago or so and I have been trying to get used to it...
Most of my years driving tractors involved Super A and M Farmalls, Wd-45's and D-17 Allis Chamers, a few model 70 Deere's, and then later a 180 Allis...
Those older open station tractors certainly give you more feedback as to what is going on...
The fully enclosed cab plus size differential of that 8050 is a big change from a medium sized open station tractor...
The more I run it the more comfortable I feel with it...
The AC in the summer is a blessing...
Not worrying about yellow jackets is nice also...
If I ever can afford it my next mowing tractor will have a cab...
The insulation from the elements is good for this old man...

After having had many open station tractors and spending time year round on them feeding livestock, pushing snow, making hay, brush hogging, etc. I can and will tell you I will never buy another without a cab.

That being said. Rain, snow, heat or cold, my animals need to be fed. I cant wait for the weather to improve either because I only have so much time to get it done. Delay to long and I've got animals without feed. A cold rain, or wet snow blowing sideways will make that cab worth every penny when you need to get the work done. Its worth even more when you hit a ground hornet nest with the mower and they swarm your machine but cant get to you because your comfy in the cab with the ac and the radio on mowing.

I like cab tractors particularly in inclement weather, open station are great on good days. I don't have control of the weather and lots of the time the weather is less than ideal when I need to work.

I hate the cold, so snow blowing with an OS tractor sounds crazy to me.

Same goes for brush hogging. I use to do 30+ acres in an OS, JD 4105 and that got old real fast! Not only the sun but the bugs, dust, poision ivy getting flown into the air. And yes, I got poision ivy while brush hogging...

I guess my vote would be for the cab. :D
