My 04 Dakota quad cab AWD has the 4.7 v8 and I haul my 4500lb boat/trailer combo 300mi a few times each year. The only thing I'd add to this discussion is to get a good running start for hills!I have electric brakes on both axles of both my boat and equipment trailers and drilled/slotted rotors and high-perf pads on the truck...just sayin...
A boat and a equipment trailer are a different beat when compared to a camper or a cargo trailer due to the wind drag. Weight is not much of a issue, especially with good trailer brakes.
I think his truck should do it fine but just understand that 4500# boat is no where near the same load as a 4,500# camper.
