I take off all the sheilds. I don't throw them away, in case I want to sell the machine. The first thing to come off is the one around the PTO on the tractor. Even then, PTO shafts can be a pain, especially in minus 20 with the grease hard.

For safety, I simply don't go near a rotating shaft, ever. I even shut the tractor off in case the electric pto decides to come on by itself before I touch it. I saw a farmer working on his bailer the other day with the tractor running. That guy has a lot of trust in the computer that runs his PTO! I wouldn't. But then all the computers have to boot up again if you shut the thing off!
