Chucke's videos have great energy and I sometimes watch them hoping some will transfer to me. Can't say I've ever heard a 8 speed forward 2 reverse called a 10 speed though.

Always thought that was called an 8x2. It is what my Romanian built Long had in it. Same unsynchronized tranny.

I've found that bypassing a safety switch doesn't always work. An example is the seat switch on my NH TC29DA. I've tried on two occasions to bypass it, first by disconnecting and, second by taping the plunger down.
In both cases it worked for a short time. In the first instance it would run for a couple seconds and then quit. The second instance it would start but then die when put in a gear range. (hydrostat).
There is apparently some logic that senses a bypass is being attempted.

I once bypassed a neutral safety switch. BAD IDEA! My son cranked the tractor from the ground while it was in gear. Luckily, the transmission was in low in both ranges and he had time to get out of the way of the rear wheel. Had it been a higher gear things might have been tragically different.

Does 8x2 mean it's a 16 speed:laughing:

You guys are making me feel older and older and older. Back in the day pop traded for an old Case 800 series row crop tractor with a bad solenoid. We used a long screwdriver for quite some time starting that tractor up before plowing. Wonder how I ever survived these 57 years without all of these safety devices?

I thought it was called an 8x2 as well. I may have gotten the idea from reading messages on this forum.

I wished it had 16 speeds. That particular 8x2 tranny when I used it for mowing really had two speeds. Too slow and Too fast. The spread between gears 4 and 5, which is where I wanted to mow was a bit too much. It always seemed like gear 4 was too slow and gear 5 was too fast. My next tractor after I traded off the Long was a nice little New Holland TC33D with a Hydrostatic transmission and even though I went from a 6 foot finish mower on the Long to a 5 finish mower on the New Holland, I wound up cutting total time off of mowing my property. It wasn't all just being able to find the correct ground speed, as the new tractor was much more maneuverable, but being able to use the correct ground speed for the varying conditions sure helped.

Along the way the new 5 foot mower (a BEFCO) was much better quality than my old 6 foot FMC mower. With the New Holland having Supersteer also contributed to the decreased mowing times.

You should not feel old at all............If anything you should feel fortunate or lucky!....They dont create safety devises to make our lives worse.....They do it to try and save lives....Its the data that is supplied to them and the question arises....How can we make this safer and avoid this from happening again...

Remember the cars when you paid extra for seat belts?...5 mile bumpers?....Steel dashes......Regular breaks?...The list is a mile long......Its called life safety...I know many very recluse people.....some are not with us anymore...Some may say stupid, or careless......They were just playing with the odds, and lost eventually.....

This is no different.

Back in 63 my grandmother's head was thrown into the windshield of their 57 Chevy when a drunk ran them off the road. 150 stitches in her face. She survived barely. Doctor's told her she would never walk again but she did and lived another 18 years. I always wear a seat belt.

I frequently stand beside the tractor, press the clutch pedal with one hand and reach the key with the other.

One of these days, the clutch 'safety' switch is going away.

That is how I started the HST B21 until the clutch safety stopped working. Now I just make sure it is in neutral. loader and backhoe always on the ground also.
