You can buy a block leak detection kit to check for the blown head gasket or cracked head etc. but there is an easier way. Remove the belt from the pump, fill the radiator to the rim then start the engine. Let the engine run for a couple minutes while you look for bubbles. If the thermostat housing is at the top of the block, it is better to remove the thermostat housing and look for bubbles. Also, did you make sure the thermostat is opening all the way?

No t-stat installed. First clue...right! Removing the waterpump belt is a good idea though. Sometimes the obvious is not biting you in the but. Thanks for the tip. With the flow of the wp it is really hard to tell if the bubbles are generated from it or another problem.
