Overpowered, overpriced new cars

I would like to own a new Shelby when it comes out. Guess it comes down to desires and priorities. We don't have a big house or drive expensive cars because of our family and college expenses.

According to the Ford website it gets 19 mpg city and 31 mpg highway. Funny, on the car forums they wonder why people would drive diesel spewing tractors around their property all day because they're bored or use it to push snow when a little snow blower will do.
Maybe there should be a $50,000 tax on diesel polluting non farm use tractors.

I was drueling as you described your car! Congrats on owning, and keeping the 66 and a big block too! I sometimes do miss mine. My favorite is a 56. My first ride in a vette was a 62. They make a beautiful noise.
Thanks for sharing.

Design, Research, Advertising, Racing, Bragging Rights... all go into the mix...

My uncle has done well over the years with high powered Ford Vehicles...

He sold his original GT40 and had enough to buy several new ones... and did buy one.

Same for the 427 Cobra he bought for 10k back in 1976... a lot of money and probably worth 50 times his purchase price...

I went the other route with Model A and T's... they are fun and have value... but nothing like the limited production high performance vehicles of any mark.

If I had the place, money and time... it could be fun... unfortunately... too many irons in the fire.

60k is considered a bargain when comparing to what's available with similar stats...

AND... it's Detroit Iron!

Let the folks with more money to burn have their behemoths, helps the economy. What I wonder is why us working stiffs cannot still buy an economical car like I used to have and wish I still had. In the 80s I bought a Geo Metro 3 cyl 5 door for less than $5K. It got 50 MPG and could keep up with 80 MPH traffic on the freeway. Greatest commuter car ever. Not a touring car but got me back and forth to work and other short runs. I put 200K miles on it in 5 years, only work was regular service, changing the timing belt every 50K, and tires. Still ran great no oil between changes.
With the emphasis on fuel economy by the government and the greenies, why is Detroit not making one. I would buy one in a heart beat, as the price would be a lot better than the ballywhood new stuff that you are lucky to get 30 MPG and you pay two prices for.

There are some Kia and Suzuki economical new cars... the Geo was made by Suzuki and re-badged... like the old Courier Pickups and Ford Escapes are tied in with Mazda.

None are 5k though...

Someone I know bought a Kia Rio last year for his daughter to take to go off to school... he paid under 12k out the door and she got almost 35 mpg on her trip east...

Mom has a 2001 Corrolla... her only new car and it consistently gets 40+ mpg... plenty of pep and hasn't cost her anything but oil changes, one set of tires and brake pads/shoes.. she wanted a sunroof got the S model... it was a little pricey out the door at 15k and change... still has the original battery!

The frosting on the cake was when Toyota extended an invitation to see her Corolla being born... we spent almost an entire day at the NUMMI plant and I have pictures of her sitting in her car going down the line with no doors, hood or trunk... each worker took a sharpie and signed the engine compartment!

The vehicles with the great mileage are some of the little German Diesels... although, they command quite a premium...

Please tell us where you plan to buy said loaded 3/4 ton truck and have enough left of the 60k to buy the new aluminum trailer much less a new Deere. ;)

GM family discount plus lots of GM card bonus points adds up !!! And, I would buy a low line trim, standard cab, 2wd truck, not one of the optioned up, crew cab models.

Sometimes the ultra performance stuff will produce something useful for the rest of the herd to enjoy later...I'm fond of electric starters and hydraulic brakes these days.
200 mph??? Not unless we're traveling above the trees and roof tops. I would like to see 200 miles per gallon out of a useful truck that does not look like it came out of a comic book or circus.

I'm with you :)

I think the new hi end Mustang makes more sense and has more usefulness than the Hummers they came out with that could not fit in a garage. I'm still scratching my head over that one. At least with a muscle car you can pick & choose when to drive it. You don't have to peg the speedometer, but I'll bet their a hoot to drive.
