You guys thinking about Bentlies and the like should look at used. You can get a car that was $300,000 new for basically the price of a fully loaded pickup after a few years.

And these cars dont really see the miles either.

For example

1998 Brooklands R. 45K miles. $49,900

Or how about a 2005 Continental GT. 66262 miles. $79,900

And those are Bentley dealer prices. They can be had for much less.

Here in Michigan lthe icense fees would be based on the cost of the car NEW....and can you imagine what insurance alone would add up to? Where do you get parts and service for those when you live in Central Michigan?

Each Thanksgiving, I make my way to the San Francisco Auto Show.

Two years ago, I was looking at the Bentley exhibit.

The gentleman behind the ropes asked if I had any questions... told him I was only looking.

He said I can't get a very good look from outside the ropes... I then explained that I didn't want to take his time as I was only looking.

Anyway... spent about 30 minutes opening the hood/trunk... sitting in the models, trying the sound systems...

As I was leaving he gave me a hardbound Bentley book in a case...

I guess you never know... couldn't get the time of day from a manufacturer that I was actually interested in and got the royal treatment from another that costs as much as a home...

Brings a smile to my face every time I see one going down the road... (several times now)

So tell us...were you dressed like you could afford one that day?

I prefer Mopars, but one of my other favorites has always been '66 SS396 Chevelle. My Uncle had one for years; it had the high output motor, low gears, and 4spd. That car was fast! Not like 160mph fast(too low of gears), but, well, I guess quick. Topped out at 120 or so, but it got there really fast.

I own a 1970 Chevelle, a little rough around the edges, a constant project.

That was a very cool experience.

The idea of a a Luxury Land Yacht has never been my thing. I am done with sports cars unless I was rich enough to be able to run one on a racetrack. There was another Factory show about the Mercedes Gull Wing. Awesome car. Well built. Cool technology. Not really my thing but a pretty car.

But there is something about the Bentley that gets my attention

Years ago when I lived in South Florida you would see all sorts of expensive cars. Mercedes, Porches and Jags were all over the place and not a big deal to see. The Rolls, Bentley's, Ferrari's, and Lamborghini's were the ones to see but they were fairly common. I saw an accident once around 1982 near a mall. Three cars rear ended each other. I think they were a Mercedes, a Porches and Roll's or Jag. It was unreal to see one of those cars but to see them in one accident was something else. Figured they had smashed up $250K worth of cars.

Every once in awhile we see a Rolls in town. I am guessing the car was from the 60's. I always smile when I see that car.

Its funny you said this! :D:D:D

When we were watching the show, I asked the wifey to find out what the car cost and she found quite a few used ones. The depreciation was huge! :D:D:D

The car in the show had tires that were $1,000. EACH!:laughing:

In high school the kid who lived next door to us was in my class, his parents bought him a '66 GTO with a 4 speed and 3 deuces....my folks bought me a 6 cylinder Mustang....but to be honest, although his GTO was keen, the car I really wanted was the '67 Chevelle SS 396, I thought it was so much better looking than the '66 model.

So tell us...were you dressed like you could afford one that day?

No... unless you take into account that SF for the most part dresses down.

Just look at Steve Jobs... almost always the same jeans and turtleneck with running shoes.

I had on jeans and a plaid shirt...

On the rare ocasions that I dress up... people always think I'm a Detective/Cop.

Even at the court house I have been waived through the Law Enforcement Security Line and asked which agency I was with... it's happened several times.

When I took Mom car shopping in 2001... the more expensive the car... the friendlier, more accommodating the sales person... not at all what I would have thought. Had the Ford Dealer say he didn't want us to do a test drive unless we were buying today...

VW, Toyota and Ford all wanted to hold your Driver's License and Car Keys...

The BMW guy said I should take mom to lunch and take it home to see how it looks in the driveway... he didn't ask for anything other than name and a phone number... we arrived at all the Dealerships in VW Rabbit...

Ended up buying a Toyota because it is the one she liked best and then we were invited to come to the factory to watch the build...

On the subject of Cars... the Doctor Mom worked for years ago had three very collectible cars... his Daily Driver was a Mercedes Gullwing that he bought new in Germany while stationed there... (His Wife refused to ride in it because there was no Ladylike way to get in or out with a dress) The wife drove a 57 Ford Retractable Hardtop and the car available to Mom and the other Staff was a BMW Isetta which he let her drive once from Sunnyvale to Lake Tahoe via Yosemite...
