Brand new BFG Commercial Traction T/A 265/75R16 LR E - I picked up a piece of crushed rock from my driveway in the middle of the tread about 2 weeks into owning them, it cut a belt and ruined the tire. I was pretty disappointed!

I change them out mostly because I have to drive 13 miles of dirt to get to town and P rated tires just will not take the rocks and usually wind up cut and unrepairable in less than 3000 miles. It's just easier and less painful (changing flats) to change them out early.

I noticed around 1 mpg drop when I went from the factory P rated Goodyear ST to Mastercraft AT2 Range C on my '05 Chevy 1/2 Ton. I have read that the addional weight of sidewalls causing a reduction in mileage on the LT tires are another reason why the factory outfits most 1/2 ton trucks the P rated tires.

Personally I feel more that springs should be a weaker link than my tires on a truck.

I have owned 10 or so 1/2 ton trucks and only one came with P tires from the factory. It was a F-150 Lightning. All the rest have had real truck tires. Not sure what you are buying with P tires?:confused2: My trucks have been a Toyota, a Nissan, and the rest Fords.

Going from a passenger tire to an LT will not increase your GVWR, but it does make the truck feel a lot more stable when towing. There are many 'weak links' when towing/hauling with a 1/2 ton, just eliminating one. And yes, adding unsprung weight will change the ride and mileage.

Reason for Passenger tires: Smoother ride for the consumer's test ride and most importantly better gas mileage for their fleet so they can better meet the gov't requirements mandated for overall all average fuel consumption.
When you notice that most P/U and SUV are used strictly for passenger mode, then it make sense for them to do exactly what they are doing. The minority buyer who wants LT tires on 1/2 & 3/4 ton trucks can get a dealer swap out for just a few bucks extra at time of purchase. The % of haulers might be higher here on TBN but nationally, I think it is very low just by looking at the number of trucks on the road with nothing but people and seldom do you see a trailer towed unless it is a camper and we know how much use a camper gets especially after the first year.

1 2005 Chevy and 1 1999 GMC, what was on them at the lot. Both 4 wheel drive with factory towing package.

I briefly looked at a Tundra CrewMax in 2008 and saw that it had P-rated tires went 3/4 Ton diesel Chevy. Actually wanted a MegaCab diesel Dodge but couldn't find what I wanted.

My 2004 GMC Sierra 1500 4wd reg cab long bed came with P-rated Goodyears. Inadequate on more than one level.
It now has Cooper DIscoverer ATR load range E and I am much happier.

I am really surprised GM is putting P tires on them. I had not looked at a GM 1/2 ton, well ever, but I know for a fact each and every Ford I have had has came with LT tires.

I do always order them with the 4x4 FX4 off road package. Same thing with my Titan, it came with the Pro X off road package also and LT tires.

I would not accept a truck with anything other unless I was buying something purpose built like the Lightning I had or the SRT-10 Ram.

I upgraded from a P rated tire to a LT E rated tire( Goodyear Duratrac) Great tire. Tires are on a Tahoe. Very little noise increase. Honestly never noticed any change in fuel comsuption (Really, how much worst can it get?). At first I raise the pressure to 80 psi all the time. I was told by a mechanic not to. He told me I was suppose to run the psi marked on the name plate. Its marked 35 psi but I still run 50-60psi. I don't have a pressure monitoring system. I think with the high pressure, you run the risk of crowning the tire and wearing out the center prematurely.
