Pacific North West - Excessive heat warning issued

The high pressure has moved south and we're getting the heat now. 90 degrees at 8am this morning. It didn't drop below 82 all night. Now it's 96 and 12% humidity.

Well - CRAP. This morning the heat is gone but now it's smoke. I could smell whiffs around 5 am. Now its full blown grey/blue haze.

And it starts all over again ............... I heard there were some pretty big fires millions of years ago, long before man roamed these lands.

This is not all that unprecedented. A degree or two record high exaggerates the impact of the heat. Where I live right now, we had 25 days over 100 degrees in 1996. Temps in the 90s for weeks at a time are not that unusual. The combination of drought with high temperatures is the real news. Ground water is tapped out, and a million wells may go dry this summer.

Forecast is 107F in Grass Valley, CA today, with overnight low about 84. That is VERY hot and unusual-- 100F is usually a high temp and it normally cools off overnight.

Bruce - that Andrus fire has been ongoing for five days. Wind changes was probably bringing that smoke my way. Last I heard it was 230 acres. The wind shifted about two hours ago and now it's clearing here. They are mopping up the fire today. Might have created additional smoke.

It's about 18 miles NE of me.

The smoke lasted about two hours here this morning. Then the winds changed direction - came out of the SW. The smoke cleared and we were OK for about another two hours. Now at 5:30 the outside temps - back up to 96F. And RH is 2%.

2% RH, yikes. It is 35% here, and it feels crackling dry. It was 96F pretty much all day, which was odd not to have the temperature warm up during the day.
