Pacific North West - Excessive heat warning issued

We did fine, but I'd forgotten about learning to shovel ash into a steel pail with the fire smoldering, to dump outside, to make room in the stove.
There is another way? :ROFLMAO:

There is another way? :ROFLMAO:
Oh yeah...

The neighbor who cleaned his two day old fireplace ashes out at his cabin and dumped them in a plastic bucket on the wooden back porch.
Who then drove back to the city for the week.
Who was then "surprised" to find he had to rebuilt the cabin.

Generous folks chalked it up to stupidity, others...

Made a great lesson for some of the rest of us though.

Yup. Steel ash bucket for me, then place bucket outside away from anything flammable. Later dispose of it in compost pile.

Speaking of ashes, I got tired of shoveling ashes because of the fine dust it makes, so I looked for an alternative. I bought as ash vacuum made by Snow Joe. This model: https://www.amazon.com/Snow-Joe-ASH...1640903686&sprefix=snow+joe+as,aps,261&sr=8-3
It works very well. I accidentally sucked up some live embers and they didn't hurt the pre-filter bag, so I think it may be made of some good heat resistant fiber. I did take it outside when I noticed the live embers being sucked up and immediately took the lid off so nothing would be damaged. Anyway, for about 60 bucks delivered I'm real happy with it. It makes cleaning out the wood stove fast and easy. It has vacuumed up about 4 cords worth of mostly alder ash, with some fir and hemlock in the mix.

Was that in 2009? I moved here in 2010 (Spokane area) and heard stories about it!
Man it was more then a couple weeks ago, so my memory might not be real clear, but that sounds about right. I remember they trucked in large generators to run gas stations, store, etc. We actually got a rebate from PSE, for real.

Lolll! Actually, the trick was to shovel ashes, with the fire burning and not smoke the house up too much. ;)
That is what I did today. I did wait until there was mostly coals and used a metal bucket with metal lid. I checked the stack at the cap before it snowed, and it did not need cleaning. So this was way, way better than cooling the whole system down and shoveling cold ashes. A tiny bit of smoke in the house, but not much. 15 minutes and reloaded the stove with wood.

I know i've posted these before, but would think i'll find some relief this next summer by going back in this thread and reminiscing about cool weather. :)

Really strange weather here. No ice melting yet, so I checked the thermometer. Really warm out, so it must be a new kind of ice.

Replaced the batteries, and nothing but dashes now.
