How about the Exxon Valdez, will that bay ever be clean?

I don't know if you'd call it clean, but the fishery has recovered. In fact, it is better now than it was before the spill.

Hillbilly, I was in Valdez and out in the bay in '91, and I understand that if you searched along the shore, turned rocks over, etc., you could find traces of the oil (or so I've heard), but as a "tourist" I never saw any signs even then of the Exxon Valdez disaster. The fishing was good, and there was lots of other wildlife; sea lions, killer whales, birds, etc.

Bird...
The reason I asked is I heard that after time that a lot of the oil residue would go away on its own(naytue would break it down).I believe I heard them talking about it on the Rush Limbaugh show.

Nature would break it down(typo on my previous post)
One question to all that is against using used motor oil on a manure spreader,I remember old farmers taking about 1/2 gallon of used motor oil and pouring it down a cutter bar,do you feel as stong about this as pouring oil on a manure spreader(just curious) yes or no?

Thanks

Yes............................ There are many things we use to do that we know now were not good.

now if some one was dumping the stuff in a creek and or dumping it by the gallons in a ditch I would report them

In effect, this is exactly what you are doing... Just a little bit at a time.

From reading your responses (and I may be totally wrong!?!?), I think the key that you are not getting is that used engine oil has contaminates that make it much worse than unused engine oil (or bar oil for that matter). And even though "you have never had a problem with it", these contaminants add up slowly and will cause problems in the long run. Maybe not for you (at least not that you notice) but perhaps for your children or your children's children...

Since this has now gone into the second page, there are a few things I'd like to mention.
First, painting used motor oil onto the deck of a manure spreader and letting it soak in will work well to protect the wood. Brushing or spraying a light coating of oil just before loading manure probably wouldn't contriibute much, and definitely wouldn't be as useful as thoroughly impregnating the deck with used oil.
As far as manure contamination goes, it won't matter. A common treatment for soil contaminated with fuel oils and heavier oils is to till woodchips and pig manure into the area. In less than 60 days, the manure will biodegrade the oil completely.
Brushing a coat of oil onto the chain before loading the spreader would definitely improve the life of the chain, as would brushing a coat of oil onto the chain after use. Manure is highly corrosive, so oiling the machinery before and after use will lengthen life of the parts.

Franz,
You said it best.
Thanks

Not sure where you are getting your information but it is neither common nor will it completely biodegrade oil in 60 days. It is called "Land Farming" and it is an involved and lengthy process.
