Spreader Painting wasteoil on manure spreaders

Didn't mean to start a war................I would put it on the brush pile to burn as well but wouldn't put in my chainsaw.

Hope you haven't confused me with a tree hugger. I just try to use better methods when one is available and not significantly more costly. Vegetable oil is actually good for treating wood. Motor oil is good for making it more flammable.

keep in mind that whatever you put down, the chains and crossbars that push the manure to the back, while not hurting the bed, or barely touching it when no weight is on them, when you load the spreader, they will be dragging on the bed moving to the back. If your wood is soaked with used oil, wont do anything, will just slide. If you coat it with something that gets hard, it will eventually get worn out and scapped off and tossed in the field. my vote is for used oil. Thats what we did. 2wice per yr.

You don't get it... I am using waste motor oil on a chain bar,why should I buy the stuff for $3 or $4 a gallon, when the used motor oil works fine for me and I can get rid of it this way.Like I say I am not contaminating any wells buy the little bit I am using.Tell me how chainsaw oild is any different then used motor oil,is chainsaw bar oil FDA approved,I am not sure.
As far as the state EPA taking a dim view,I do not really care, now if some one was dumping the stuff in a creek and or dumping it by the gallons in a ditch I would report them. These EPA laws are here to protect our enviroment for the good, but at the same time on some things they are on over kill. That is one of the reasons so many industrial jobs are leaving this country along with NAFTA.OSHA and the EPA are good in a lot of ways, but on the same token there is a lot of rift/raft and ridiculous ideas that they try to enforce.
And I don't care for these tree huggin enviromentalist/Peta wackos

The oil formulated for chain saw bars has an additive that helps it stick to the chain. Motor oil doesn't have that additive and most of the oil gets thrown off. In addition used motor oil will contain sulphuric acid, most of it is held in suspension by the detergents, but how can you tell when they have held all they are going too?

I have used used motor oil for years and never had any problems, and I can shut my saw off and I still have oil on the chain.....but thanks for the answer.

I agree.. there will be some contamination. I would opt more for an asphalt fence paint. It will protect nearly as well as the oil, and most of the voc's in the paint disipate quickly leaving a fairly environmentally inert covering.

For the chains, you could use a food grade grease... chevron made one.. I'm sure many ag stores do carry food grade grease, for use in dairys..

Ground water contamination is hard to get rid of after years of low volume introduction.

Remember when farmers sprayed diesel fuel along the fence lines to kill grass? Think that is environmentally safe?

<font color=blue>"I'm going to respectfully disagree. Just because it is a common practice to use old oil as a preservative, doesn't mean its right.

Will it get into the field? Yes. Enough to do damage to your crop or livestock? Probably not, but who knows."

This could be kicked around for days.....we all have our opinions.....no sense in beating a dead horse.

I don't think that it is a matter of opinion that waste oil contamination via the aforementioned procedure will occour. I would take it as granted that contamination will occour to some degree. That being said, it is also a given that some amount of environmental contamination is inevitible by simply using a vehicle like a tractor to work an area. Nearly every tractor at some point has dropped some oil.. had a hose failure, or a loss during maintenance. The latter is not as preventable.. you just try to be careful... the former, by design, exposes material to oil contaminets... and that IS preventable.

You would be appalled to see some of the projects I have overseen where long term petro contamination has occoured.

"no sense in beating a dead horse"

If one of those gets in your ground water you have a REAL problem! ;)
