Pallets in fields

   / Pallets in fields #821
I'm from Scots-Irish stock and moved to the Upstate in 1977.
Speaking of our ancestors, the story goes that when settling a new area, the Germans would first build a barn; the English,a church; and the Scots-Irish, a still.:)
Steve

I've seen that story too. Part of my family are Scotts Irish. We occasionally marry outside the family and picked up about equal parts of English and German along the way.:confused2:

The scientific persuit of the cause of pallets in fields has been a noble endeavor. I'm afraid we've been focusing on the wrong area of study, however. It's not science but, HISTORY that suggest that these pallets might be lost emigrants from the Palatine area of Germany. They come to New Jersey, in the warmer months, huddle together in fields until it gets cold, then make their way back to the fatherland. A new shipload of these tempest tossed masses finds it's way to the Jersey Shore every year.

This would be a most impressive conjecture--if the mystery involved stacks of empty beer cases--and not pallets.

In my various sojourns I have crossed the New York State Mohawk River via the Palatine Bridge. Also, I have lived in the Hunsrueck area of the German Palatine and toiled mightily deep within a secretive underground facility which lays in the shadow of the Erbeskopf, the highest peak of the Hunsrueck Mountains. Stacks of bier cases were present in great quantity, mostly Bitburger and Kirner Pils. However, I saw no evidence of pallets across the fields and forests of the Palatine, which I explored at great length for many years.

If you had spent less time stuck on the Squirrel Girl running your motor, and more time reading your history, it would be easily apparent to the rankest amateur history sleuth that the ties between the USA and the German Palatine are to the Pennsylvania Dutch, and not with New Jersey. Sir, I am afraid you have advanced an idea with the most shabby historical underpinnings.

Dave,
Let me see if I understand you correctly. You've lived in the Paletine region in Germany and near Paletine New York. Is that correct? When you answer, I'll have more questions.

Dave,
Let me see if I understand you correctly. You've lived in the Paletine region in Germany and near Paletine New York. Is that correct? When you answer, I'll have more questions.

I lived in the village of Niederhambach in the German State of Rheinland-Pfalz, the modern state which encompasses the historical "Palatinate."

I briefly traversed the Palatine Bridge while investigating reports of pallets at the Baseball Hall Of Fame in Cooperstown, NY; a town named after James Fenimore Cooper, the author of The Last of the Mohicans.

What are your questions?

Sentient pallets? Balderdash!

Next you'll have us believe that 'wire hangers' multiply in our closets when we're not looking.

I can debunk this so called "theory" quick-smart if Steve would loan me his Scientific X-ray Glasses!

I promise to have them back by Thursday... Friday at the latest.

I think you are onto something here. Typical wire hangers are inverted Vs with a base on the bottom and a hook on the top. They must be closely related to the inverted V pallets we have been discussing. I never did know how the extra hangers came to be in my closets, but now I understand they might have emigrated from Palatinate with the pallets. It took an objective opinion from down under to figure this one out.

Thought I'd stop by to see if you guys were still at it. 83 pages? :confused2:

Didn't look to see if this has been mentioned but today marks the one month anniversary of this conundrum.

Carry on.

I'll PM you. These questions are rational and have no place in this thread.

Well, on the bright side, we have managed to debunk the hayist, seedist, and drainist theories.;)

Sir, I will endeavor to answer your questions to the best of my ability. I'm not sure if I can do rational, it's been a while.

Still at it? When world peace, and, or, world domination hangs in the balance? Surely you jest? I reiterate my position below, scoff if you will...

"Hmm... Found a few very disturbing pieces of information.

First:
"It was used in Desert Storm to ID tanks and vehicles as part of the coalition.

the armor was designated as:

/\ - Alpha

> - Bravo

< - Charlie

|> - Delta"

Second:
"During Desert Storm, it was the universal don't shoot me sign for the allies."

Now, if you subscribe to the inverted v theory, which I do, then it appears as if it might be for identification purposes. What purpose, you ask? Well, as I said, it is very disturbing... Let's take the first fact above, which implies that the inverted v represents Alpha. Ok, Alpha... A, in military speak. A as in Alien! Second fact, a symbol to avoid friendly fire. I believe what we have here is a hybrid theory, the Militarist Alienist theory! They're marking friendly fields, so they can destroy the other unmarked fields! Seems something, or someone, disrupts their plan each year, and the window of opportunity for the attack closes. They then remove the pallets until the next opportunity appears. What delays the attack each year, I can't say... Perhaps bad directions, or gelled fuel(it is cold in space) Whatever it is, they could overcome it at any time! We need to find the owners of the palleted fields and obtain information by whatever means necessary! We need to know how they communicate with the aliens. Although, it might just be easier to move the pallet structures to unmarked fields, thus making sure those owners are safe, leaving the traitors unmarked and open for destruction!"

We are just getting warmed up. We will solve world peace next, a much easier subject.

Who are these drop-in Pollyannas that pass through with no contribution to our efforts? He could be a Fifth Columnist.

Actually, that may be a good thing. They never avail themselves of the extensive scientific literature that we have developed. Perhaps we should post a "No Loitering" sign to discourage these "passers through." ;)

For shame, sirrah!

Were we to create an inner-circle of hard scientists we would be closing ourselves off to fresh avenues of inquiry. This is elitist talk and I shall have none of it. :melodramatic:

Why, an innocent utterance from the newest of "Newbie" could lead to the resolving of our quandary.

My goodness Mate, we must establish and enforce some standards!

Those wishing to offer utterances should be required to be free of Moral Turpitude at a minimum. Better yet, they should be required to submit a handwritten essay, in original triplicates, detailing how they will conduct themselves in such a way as to avoid the Seven Deadly Sins while joining our pursuit of scientific knowledge.

There should be strict qualifications and a permit issued for the wearer of professional grade X-ray Vision glasses too. We cannot afford the damage that would be inflicted upon our cause due to some troglodyte's misuse of x-ray vision capability, or worse, risk the confiscation of our valued instruments of inquiry.

I will refrain from naming names, but it has come to my attention that there are those who are obviously slathering at the bit to obtain the use of professional grade X-ray Vision instruments.

Oh man, essays and permits? Can't scientists be free wheeling and spontaneous in their imagination and quest for the answer to our mystery?

I think you have to be an historian to do that or, a scientist with a red neck.
