Father-in-law was being quite mean to the kids (one is my spouse) because he didn't have the car anymore. His doc agreed but did say that the state of MN does have a cognitive test for driving. So my spouse headed back up to get him in to do it. The test was in three parts which as you pass them, go to the next. His ability was so poor they stopped the test during the 2nd portion. When the test operator said this, he broke down and cried.
That'll be all of us sooner or later.

My father in-law gave his license up fairly easily. We were fortunate. One day he just said "I probably shouldn't be driving anymore." and that was that. Fortunately, his wife was 13 years younger than him and enjoys driving. So he'd hop in the passenger seat and enjoy the scenery.

To reiterate. This spring, her dad had confided to my spouse "I'm afraid I can't care of your mother anymore. We might have to move to assisted living". Then he went in for a full upper and lower colonoscopy which made him ill and he struggled to recover. After that they went into assisted living and he never understood why. Or why we didn't want him to drive anymore.

I’ve been lucky on that front… all decided so many crazy drivers ignoring traffic signals… etc. they no longer wanted to drive.

In the last 20 minutes 3 different cars ignored traffic lights and I don’t mean as the light was turning but simply driving on through the reds…

Started the process of cleaning out my parent's house yesterday to prep for sale. Filled a 20 yard dumpster with ease, going to need another one. Pretty tough day

I have been cleaning out my Dads house for eight months. My FILs for six. My Dad had nice stuff, he kept what he had functional and clean. My FIL, not so much. We will require a lot of outside assistance including dumpsters for the FIL.

It's hard, emotionally, mentally and physically.

I have become detached from stuff. I have no desire to hold onto things and in my mindset keep repeating to myself that I will not "do this" to my kids.

Her dad was demanding his car back so my spouse took him to the the states cognitive driving test which he failed BIG time. Afterwards he stated "it was setup for me to fail". Them my spouses brother showed up and gave him the keys and car back and texted "he seems fine to me" and left town for my spouse to care.

.... "he seems fine to me" ....

Man, those words are reprehensible to me now-a-days.

Dealing with in-laws and family.

Some people just cannot accept reality.
