I grew up in texas. Now I live in canada and the weirdest thing to adjust to was taking your shoes off before coming into a house. We go to gatherings and there will be 20 pairs of shoes at the entrance. I came into the house today for lunch and wouldnt you know it I tracked mud in. Never fails, I thought my boots would be clean but nooooo! The wife is right behind me with tne broom.

I lived in Alaska for 20+ years and because the fall, winter & spring were always so wet & mucky(in Anchorage) we always took our shoes off when entering any house. Funny - you could always tell a Cheechako. Go to any gathering at anybodies house and there would be one guy who would leave his shoes on. He would come in, sit down and pretty soon he would see that he was the only person with shoes on. You would see him get up, sneak over to the door and remove his shoes. It only took once, but it was what everybody did to try and keep the yuck at bay.

I spent part of my youth living in Hawaii where the Japanese tradition of removing shoes whenever entering a residence is the cultural norm. Ever since then I find it odd to walk into a home without removing my shoes. We have our house slippers right at the entrance as well as racks to store our outside shoes. It takes a while to get used to but I now look forward to getting my outdoor shoes off and stepping into slippers.

You do realize those lugs provide traction, and for some it could a safety concern?

Really? I had no idea that the tread was for traction. Never once noticed that my work boots had better grip than my cowboy boots.

I didn't say cut off the lugs. I said a tapered edge doesn't hold junk like square grooves. Traction exists just the same.

If I am going to be the house for any length of time, I remove my shoes, otherwise I apologize and clean up after myself.

I took a stiff scrub brush and screwed it to the deck upside down through the block. Worked ok (just ok) until we too the deck apart. I ought to do that again on the replacement...

Happy wife, happy life.
A phrase invented by real estate agents to convince you to buy the house your wife liked but you knew was gonna be trouble.

If Momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy. That would be the corollary I suppose. True enough..
