I've noticed a adjustable bolt on my BX2350 that limits how far the HST pedal will go forward. It seems it would limit how far down it can be pressed. Can that be adjusted to give the tractor a little more road speed, or is that one of those setting best left alone.

Best left alone. It's not a throttle motion restrictor. I think you may be able to bind the swash plate if you go to far - but that's not for certain. (If you don't know what a swash plate is and does, you REALLY don't want to monkey with that!!)

Edit - correct adjustment is to shorten the bolt so the full stroke does not touch it. Then raise the bolt until it just touches, then go up 1 full turn and lock in place. If you lower it so the bolt does not touch the peddle, you won't bind the swash plate, but you will bend the linkages $$$.

John Bud, of course I know what a swash plate is. Thats what you do when you rinse the dishes off before putting then in the dishwasher isn't it?

Thanks for the answer. Kind of had the feeling it was one of those things best left alone.

John Bud.....what is the swash plate and what is its function? How does it work??

DDM84's link is pretty good.

In words, the swash plate determines the displacement in a variable displacement multi-piston pump. It determines the amount of hydraulic fluid that is pumped to the drive motor per revolution. More fluid = more speed, but it has to pump that extra fluid in the same number of engine rotations. So, more swash plate angle is like shifting into a higher gear as you must do more work in the same time. That's why when you are slowing down with a hydrostat, pressing the "go peddle" harder makes things worse. You are essentially shifting into a HIGHER gear when you really want to be shifting into a lower gear by lifting the peddle slightly.

Also realize that the basic function of the HST in our little tractors is the same as in that large CAT.

Great video!! Same idea is used on helicopters, and is also called a swash plate-- If I'm not mistaken, its funtion is to change the pitch of the blades independently depending on which side of the rotor disc needs to be altered.... Any chopper mechs/drivers out there?

Sounds about right to me, though I remember swashplate as one word in the world of the rotary winged aircraft.

Yes, of course-- I remember (now) on rotaries it was one word.... No, I wasn't a driver or mech; the pilot of an OH-58 let me fly it for a couple of hours once, but I was a Chinese lingie, 69-72. Still love that video clip!
