I am going to try to bring this old thread back to life.
Last week I broke a connection on an old water line. 3/4" galvanized pipe which had been assembled and buried under oak tree in a damp and acidic location. The original install was done in the late 1920s. The outside was rust city, and my previous experience with this same line in other locations was that the fittings were very stuck.
To make matters worse, it had been cast into an old concrete retaining wall, and repair options were limited.
I remembered this old thread, and decided that I would give the acetone and ATF mixture a try. Mixed it up in a tuna can, and applied with a cheap 1/2" paint brush, on the only fitting between the break and the water meter.
An hour later, the fitting was off the pipe. Amazing stuff.
The only dicey moment came when it looked like the ATF and the acetone were not going to mix well. I kept stirring for a few minutes and eventually they dissolved in each other.
Not only did I get it apart, but the pipe threads did not "grab" each other, and looked perfectly preserved after the fitting came off, so I was able to screw a brand new one on and get a good seal.
