YIKES..

"DURSBAN, produced by Dow Chemical, is one of the most dangerous pesticides on the market. Find out why the Dursban ban is so important. ... "

THAT sure is a comforting first read on a google search!!

Compared to what you they come and spray your house with though Richard it is MILD. That's why you have to have a license for the other stuff because it is so potent. All of it is potentially very dangerous. I don't know of any "natural" way to get rid of them. The stuff that I spray my crops with is extremely lethal. I have to get certified every year just to be able to buy it to spray. Have to wear mask and gloves to handle it and then you can't be in the area when you spray, etc.

I've wondered for a long time what kind of bugs I had all over my Chinaberry trees and the ground underneath them, and now after looking at several sites on the Internet, apparently I have boxelder bugs without any box elder trees. I've not noticed them anywhere except for the massive quantities of them around those 3 Chinaberry trees. I read one place that spraying diazinon, a number of other insecticides, and even 1/2 cup of laundry detergent per gallon of water will kill the ones you spray but won't keep more from coming back. I've tried diazinon and malathion, but don't think I've affected the population much.

Richard,
Here's a company site that sells chemicals direct. http://www.pestproducts.com/default2.htm
You can see their recomendations for the Boxelder bugs and, if you can't get the chemicals locally, they may be able to sell them to you. (some chemicals are restricted in some states).

Hope that helps,

Richard,

You may have the wasps living in the eaves of your house. We had a colony of them chew through the wallboard in our shed dormer this past summer. It took two visits from the pest control people to "correct" the situation. Cost $150 for the treatment and was well worth it. I couldn't have done the same job they did. They used two treatments. An internal treatment to kill of the nest(s). An external treatment to kill any returning.

I don't mind going after paper wasps or hornets nests where I can easily escape. But being up on a ladder and not knowing what is in store..... Professional help is sometimes the better way to go.

jdkid,

Oh yes, Ladybugs are one the best to keep around. Except that they are more potent when they are in their nymphal stage. Voracious aphid eaters. Good Bugs!!!

JD Kid,
Here's a couple of pictures of what we call lady bugs in the States:

I'd bet they're the same critter. Ever hear the old saying "Too much of a good thing"? That's kind of the problem for some areas here with ladybugs. While they are a beneficial insect, I've been deer hunting in South Alabama in November and January and have seen literally hundreds of them crawling on the inside walls of the hunting lodge. Up to a certain point, they're a good thing, after that they're a pest.

We have our share of lady bugs here in Georgia, also. A couple of years ago there were thousands of them, not as many this year. I heard that the goverment seeded lady bugs in the south to fight aphids (or something) that were hurting the pines. Pine is a big crop down this way.
