Pet Dumping

ANother problem with allowing them to run loose is the possibility of them contracting rabies from the wildlife. Occasionally I hear about a local rancher having a calf killed by a pack of dogs. Unless you want a pet, there is just no option but get rid of them.

BobT,

The shelter, I believe is a kind alternative. Yes, most of us know that all animals there don't make it, but they do have a chance to get adopted. Besides, not everyone can take care of the animals dropped at their doorstep.

I think a lot of the pet dumping is done by college students at the end of the school year. Every big school I've been at that's located near rural areas (like Penn State, Cornell, and the University of Georgia) run articles near the end of the year asking students to take their unwanted pets to a shelter. I suppose students see the choice as certain death at a "shelter" vs. a tiny chance that a farmer will take them in. There's not much you can do about such irresponsible people.

There have been several articles in the local newspaper about the number of cases of rabies in the county this year, so that is a distinct possibility.

And when I was about 14, I had a horse killed by a pack of dogs, and a neighbor's horse was killed by the same dogs, and our milk cow was attacked right at the barn, and probably would have been killed if Dad hadn't been home at the time and chased them off. I haven't heard of that happening in many years though.

And MarkV, sounds like my wife. She'd probably run me off before she'd let me get rid of the dog.

Wen,Most stray animals have a way of finding a good home!!!I'm a delivery driver and work in a rural area and come in contact with a lot of dogs everyday. When I ask most folks where they got their dogs, most replys are "Well,he just showed up one day,and he's been here ever since" It's a shame the way some people treat animals,a small number of them are lucky enough to find good owners that will treat them like family.

Bird,I guess we are lucky not to have the pet dumping problem that you and several others have.We have an excellant animal shelter in our little town, ran by the most dedicated animal lover you have ever seen. They will take in any animal, and work very had at trying to find a good home for them. Our biggest problem is people dumping their trash along and on our property. Some ass----- are too lazy to re-cycle,and find it much easier to haul their garbage out to the country and just throw it out along the road.I've dug through others trash to find some kind of address as to come up with an owner, called the Sheriffs Dept.and filed a complaint, all to no avail. The laws againt dumping trash carry about the same plenalty as dumping animals. The last three times someone took upon themselves to dump their crap in my back yard,I dug around, found an address, took their sh-- and dumped right back into their front yard.Ever since the last time I re-delivered some butt-heads trash back to them,we've not had problems for about the past year.I guess the word is getting out.

We have garbage pick up here, but sure hope if they lose a bag out of their truck, it is nowhere near your house. Think I will start putting all that stuff with an address through a shreader. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

YOU GUYS!

We have a long dead end next to us with a neighbor at the end. I once noticed a pickup truck loaded with crap driving down his driveway. When they got the end they turned around and came back. Following my gut instincts I jumped on the dirt bike and followed them from a discreet distance. Found them dumping on someone elses property. Called the sheriff, they wouldn't even take a report because it wasn't my property. I explained that the guy had been caseing my place too, if he had permission to dump he wouldn't have been looking elsewhere. They didn't care. Waited down the road and nonchalantly got his license number. Got the owners name from the county and forwarded the info to him. Never even got a howdy-do for my trouble. Needless to say if I see a semi dumping a compacted load of garbage on his property I won't care except to get the county to declare his property a nuisance and cite the owner! Man if someone went to trouble to let ME know I was receiving garbage I'd be SURE to let them know I was grateful. Most folks do, but there are others that are kind of dullards.

I always wonder what goes through people's minds..."Honey, don't you think our sofa/stove/sheetrock would look nice in the ditch in front of these folks place?"

"I'm sorry sir I seem to have my bucket teeth wedged under your car door, here, let me lift the bucket up and get them unstuck...oops/w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gifI seem to have turned your car over."

"I'll bet you forgot to ask your wife if she thinks your car would look good upside down in my ditch, you know what? It does!"

Re: Trash Dumping

A lawyer friend of mine told me how he handles instances of trash being dumped on his property. First he searches through the trash till he finds a document with the culprit's name. (I was a little surprised that anyone would be dumb enough to dump such incriminating evidence, but he assures me, they almost always do.) Then he calls them up, and very non-confrontationally tells them, "Excuse me, but the person you've hired to haul your trash has dumped it on my property. Could you please have them remove it." Of course everyone knows who dumped what where, but this gives the slob a way of not losing face and it works. It even works if the trash isn't dumped on your property. It isn't as satsifying though as taking a baseball bat to their mailbox.

What goes through peoples minds indeed. Couple of summers ago we went to our camp and found that somebody had pulled off the highway and dumped their RV holding tank alongside of a section of old highway. It was on our neighbour's property, but still less than 200' from our dug well. Now that would have nice to send back to somebody.

Seems like most people just don't care. However, in this case, you can't say they didn't give a..........well, you know.
