Pet Dumping

I live on a dead end street and was that last house at the time (More have since been built) I saw this young guy come driving down the road and when he gets to the circle at the end starts emptying trash. (Whole car load) I was grading with my old Oliver with loader so I blocked the road on his way back and told him where the dump was and to pick it all back up. He starts with this big attatude untill I lowered the bucket about 1" from his hood. Asked if he wanted me to rearange the sheet metal on his car before I had him arreasted? He got the idea that it was better to pick it all up (even the stuff that was dumped before). Told him that I got his plate # and if there is any more dumping of trash it was his A--, and he would be the first one arrested. Never had another problem.

There's a major problem with trash dumping on the country roads around here, too, but they usually go well on past my place and out of sight of any houses. And maybe we're luckier than most, because our Sheriff will file charges if they can identify the person who did it; either from witnesses or documents in the trash.

The thing I don't understand is why they charge people $5 per cubic yard to dump their trash at the landfill instead of simply allowing residents to go in and dump like they did years ago. It seems to me they are encouraging people to either dump illegally or keep their trash on their own place and make it look bad.

Bird,You said it,our local landfill started charging a $25.00 minimum for anything taken to the dump,thats when our trouble began.I know this because I have drug a couch out of our ditch with our trusty Kubota,loaded in the pickup,and taken it to the dump,and paid 25 bucks to get rid of someone elses junk.Our property is bordered by a 2 lane US hwy and a county road.The county road is a great place for these people to drive up,and through their crap in the ditch,the ditch I'm speaking about is the main drainage into a 6 acre lake thats behind our house,the same water hole my family,friends and neighbors enjoy fishing and swimming in.There is nothing like diving off the dock and seeing a dirty diaper floating close by.The hwy. frontage is just as bad,we've got about a 1/4 mile that I make around 6-7 trips down each year picking up other peoples beer cans,bottles,and just trash in general.I have come to the conclusion that there is a lot of slobs traveling our roads,and it's getting to be more and more work all the time to try to keep a nice place that you can take some pride in.Funny story: The first trash I found dumped on our place,went throught it ,found the owners name and address,called the Law,who in fact did contact these people,and told them to pick it up.These ass----- came out and dug through 6 bags of garbage and removed anything that had their name on it,and left everything else right where it laided.I was not a happy camper,so I loaded up that 6 bags of crap and drove up to the curb directly in front of their house and started slinging this stuff as high and as far as I could,making sure the bags exploded on impact right in the middle of their front yard.About the time I was on the 5th bag,here comes the owner wanting to know just what in he-- I thought I was doing.I told him I was simply returning the favor and that if he wanted to go through this whole process again,that would be fine with with me,cause by this time I was really starting to enjoy myself.No more trash from him anyway.Isn't living in the country fun?

I would thing that if you have a county dump that they would take this for free since you're cleaning up someone else's mess! Don't know?

When my son was a cub scout, the other leader contacted our township and asked if we and the boys cleaned up our rural road, would they take it and they did! Might be worth a try.

Some of it's money based but even if the dump was free you'd still have those clucks dumping where convenient.

And your comment about "keeping a nice place"...and guess whatelse you get for your trouble...your property is worth more. (Can you say TAX ASSESSOR). I am so p***ed off by this tax structure. I wish I had the time to get a petition up to convert property tax to strictly a square foot issue. If you build 2000 sq feet you pay xxx dollars, whether it is a dump or a 2000sq foot marble mansion. They can fly over and measure it from the air if they want. We have a couple of good size garages and I still want it that way, at least I'd feel it was fair. One time someone in a helicopter sat over us for quite a time, I'm guessing to check for heat loss from the buildings (a sign of a dope growing operation I'm guessing) Wish it had been closer to the 4th of July.

And no, I'm not anti government, just anti nonsense. I was told (after I had been almost flooded) by a country road's drainage ditch I wasn't allowed to work on the right of way without a permit. Haven't been flooded since. They'll have to pry my cold dead fingers from my backhoe controls!

JimBinMI, our city/county landfill charges $5 per cubic yard to dump there. Then they have one day per year that is the "county wide clean-up day" when you can dump free, and there's always a half mile long line of pickups and trailers to get in there. The clean-up day this year was last Saturday, but it rained Friday night, so they postponed it until July 8 (had a deputy sherifff at the landfill to tell people, as they arrived, that it had been postponed). He was telling them they could dump, but would probably get stuck and were on their own to hire a wrecker to get out if they did./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif So, there was a line trucks and trailers arriving and turning around and leaving with their trash. I got lucky and found a salvage yard that took my truckload./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

the dump in town here has a neat system, all town residents can get a pass and you pay $4 per trip. They have a tranfer site set up that is all pavement and you throw your trash over a 2 ft. cement wall into a waiting large roll-off dumpster. They have about 3 dumpsters for trash and then have seperate ones for everything under the sun! (ashes, xmas trees, cardboard, paper and my favorite to pick, scrap metal) Now in the Village where my antique shop is the trasfer site is a drive-thru building and it is free to residents. They have about 10 dumpsters in that place, one for each type of trash.

Von, that sounds much more sensible, and more like it used to be around here a long time ago. But for the past 15 to 20 years, they charge admission every time you go in, and the amount is based on their estimate of cubic yards, plus extra for things like tires, appliances, etc.

Always took my county landfill for granted. No fees for County residents. Open on Saturdays. They accept used oil, batteries and anything else at their recycling center. Twice a year they run a bulk trash collection. On those days, crews are sent out to haul off anything and everything that can be brought to the curb. You only have to call a week in advance so that they can plan for how big, and what type, of truck is required and how large a crew. No cost (outside of the usual taxes, of course!).

Roy, your local politicians must be far behind the times and old fashioned (or else just have a lot better common sense than ours)./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif What you describe is what I was accustomed to until the early to mid-80s, when they started charging a fee for residents to dump.

And when part of my responsibilities in the mid-80s included the police auto pound, I had to budget for cash to pay for a city owned pickup truck to enter the landfill (or transfer station) to dump trash from city property. Then when I contracted with a private firm to pick up the garbage at the auto pound, the city council sent an inquiry as to why I was paying a private firm to pick up the garbage from city property when the city had a whole fleet of garbage trucks. I sent back a very short memo stating that I did it because it was cheaper, and never heard another word about it.
