Don't use a post hole digger on a 3-point. The auger bit finds vertical by hanging loosely. When you start drilling the hole, the auger bit can travel and go in at an angle.

Whereas, with a skid steer auger you can hold the bit in a vertical position and it will stay vertical and drill straight. Much more precise holes. Much faster too because you can get lined up over the hole with less jockeying back and forth.

I have both. Won't use the auger on the 3-point any more.

I think you would be better served by renting the skidsteer with an auger. The reason I say that is you can reverse an auger on the skidsteer to back it out of a hole when the bit hooks onto a rock or root and you can lift it. With a 3 pth it must be a struggle to get the bit out of the ground. A skidsteer can also apply a bit of down pressure if the bit isn't pulling into the ground. Unless your tractor has down pressure there will be situations where the auger won't pull in. Where I live there are lots of rocks and without down pressure I'd only be able to dig 1 hole in perhaps 4 started.

I have a Danhueser...nothing tougher...bought used 30 years ago, used quite a bit, still works.

PHD and rock country don't compute.... without down pressure on the PHD, when it hits a rock of any substance, it just sits there and bounces. I even mounted weights of 200 lbs on mine to get more down pressure.

And, if the auger hits a rock tip and pulls in and stalls the tractor, then you may not be able to extract the auger without manually unscrewing it from the ground...not a happy thing...I know.

Recommend using skid steer...drills straight holes better, has down pressure AND significant lift pressure as well. Make sure you use rock points!!

I have an old Danhueser 3ph model and a new hydraulic phd PA30 for my backhoe. No comparision when drilling holes in rocky soil, the hydraulic unit is the go to digger. My advice would be to rent the ss and hyd. phd. I would have all the holes marked where you want them first and have everything out of the way, this way you can make a lot of holes in short order, save time and money too.

The prices on our website are the lowest prices we can advertise. Shipping is included in those prices to a commercial address or supporting freight terminal within 1,000 miles of Newton, NC.
We will give TBN members a special price on a Danuser auger drive/auger combo for a limited time but that has to be done by a simple PM or phone call.
Thanks for your interest and support.
