Thanks for all of the great posts. As far as a heavier chassis, I have considered that and may sneak a peek at the 1500HD or 2500HD with the Vortec 6000 just to see. I used to tow the same trailer with a '95 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 5.9 Magnum, and it did OK. Again, I wasn't pulling the trailer that far or that often.

Just simple curiosity, but why have you eliminated the Ford with the 5.4L engine from consideration?

Because I come from a long line of Chevy owners and my F-I-L was a Chevy dealer for many years. It was near blasphemy when I bought the '95 Dodge, but I got it off of the F-I-L's used lot, so that made it OK.
If I bought a Ford, I would likely be excommunicated from both sides of the family!!

Hey, that is cheap, around here it is $2.16 only super unleaded is more expensive. $2.18.

Ouch.

I have an '03 GMC Sierra 4x4 Z71 with the 5.3, extended cab. It tows my tractor with backhoe and loaded tires with no issues. I also regularly tow my enclosed snowmobile trailer. I've got 29,000 miles on it and it has not had service. I get about 17 around town when it's not hauling, much less with the trailers. My previous truck was an extended cab 4x4 Dakota with the 5.2 (318). It got 15-16 mpg.

Your mileage may vary.

Todd, that sounds to me like a good reason to eliminate Ford from consideration. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

The only way to insert the phrase fuel economy with the phrase Dodge Ram is add the word CUMMMINS!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Just as a data point, I have a 2003 Silverado 1500 extended cab bought at the end of 2002 and have had no problems. I'm glad I bought it -- which is, I guess, the best praise. I've not towed anything although I've put some major weight in the back.

One interesting thing I found out with this truck is that tire pressure has a remarkably large affect on the mileage. More than any other vehicle I've owned.

Well that would be a bargain I'd pay all day. I was obviously delusional when I wrote that as I paid $2.70 this past weekend.

I've got a 2005 Nissan Titan...awesome half ton truck. Pulls my Bobcat no problem (max tow 9300#).

I have a 2003 GMC Sierra extended cab with 5.3 V8. Its not 4WD, gets about 18 mpg mostly highway (empty). The only problem I had was with a steering coupling that was replaced under warranty and some kind of climate control sensor, replaced under warranty. Currently have 50,000 miles and am real happy with it. Drives extremely well and is very comfortable. Also has a great Bose sound system.
