I have a 2001 Chevy 1500HD (crew cab) with the 6.0 gas engine. Best running truck I have had but the fuel milage is 14 mpg at best. Just a couple of hundred shy of 100k and no repairs except for the rock that went through the A/C condenser.

If I bought a Ford, I would likely be excommunicated from both sides of the family!! )

But at least you would have the better truck in the family you are no longer on speaking terms with.

Todd,

I just got an '05 GMC Sierra Crew Cab. If you're looking at the Chevy, check out the GMC's as well.

Although I haven't towed more than a few thousand pounds, the towing capability is very respectable and I wouldn't expect any issues getting closer to its max. capabilities.

The 5.3 has plenty of power (towing or not) and I do get about what others state in MPG's (approx. 17).

The ride is very comfortable but a few hundred pounds in the box makes the ride on back roads a bit more civil.

With the crew cab, the box is pretty short (less than 6'). It's fine for my day-to-day use and I prefer for turning radius and getting it in the garage.

As far as options, I have the SLT so it comes with most things you would find in a car. The one option I do find pretty handy is the auto folding mirrors when pulling in the garage.

Yes, I would recommend and I would get another.

Todd,

I went truck shopping with a buddy this past weekend. He's in the market for a basic work truck (2WD, V6, only options he wants is air and auto). Chevy dealer said there's $3000 rebate plus another $1000 for models that have been on the lot for a "while". Having just bought an 05 SuperDuty Lariat, I was in reverse sticker shock. One Chevy he looked at the dealer was willing to sell it for $14,500.

He has no brand loyalty, actually, this will be his first P/U. I didn't steer him in any certain direction either (as far as I could tell). He narrowed down to the Ford and Chevy. He felt the Dodge to be overpriced.

Good Luck!

The only way to insert the phrase fuel economy with the phrase Dodge Ram is add the word CUMMMINS!!!

An extra "M" for milage /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Similar situation here! Except for me if I bought anything but a Ford! My grandfather had a Ford dealership years ago...

Hazmat,
But isn't it a wash since you left out the "e" in mileage? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I guess it can't go the "E"xtra mile...

( I've got a '99 Silverado (first year of the current body style) with almost 90k. It is an Extended Cab short bed (6.5') 4WD/Z71. I have the 5.3 V-8 w/ 4 speed automatic, 3.73 gears and a locking differential. I've only had a couple of minor problems with it. Most expensive being a 4wd selector switch at about $40. I've done quite a bit of towing with it and no problems. Even towing 13k a couple of times with it. Power wise was fine, though the suspension bottomed out pretty good w/ that much weight. Now towing Mom & Dad's 32' camper at about 7500#s, you don't even know it is back there. I've haul a lot of gravel/dirt for the house & garage. I will typically get a ton of gravel in the bed and ton on my tiny 2 wheel trailer. It handles all of that weight just fine - wish I could say the same for the trailer. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif We average in the 19 - 20 MPG range of running empty - that is usually 2 adults & 2 kids in car seats.

Thought I would have a response to Av8r2230 heavy foot comment. I'm fairly heavy footed, but the wife is fairly light footed. We do about the same or sometimes mine is a little better. Go figure. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif )

I have the same truck but an '04 and love it. Only thing I would change would be to get a crew cab with the 6.5' bed

If you are going to get one, you might want to wait about 6 months or less. With the fuel peices going up the gulping vehicle prices will drop.
