I have a 2001 Chevy 1500HD (crew cab) with the 6.0 gas engine. Best running truck I have had but the fuel milage is 14 mpg at best. Just a couple of hundred shy of 100k and no repairs except for the rock that went through the A/C condenser.

I just got an '05 GMC Sierra Crew Cab. If you're looking at the Chevy, check out the GMC's as well.

Although I haven't towed more than a few thousand pounds, the towing capability is very respectable and I wouldn't expect any issues getting closer to its max. capabilities.

The 5.3 has plenty of power (towing or not) and I do get about what others state in MPG's (approx. 17).

The ride is very comfortable but a few hundred pounds in the box makes the ride on back roads a bit more civil.

With the crew cab, the box is pretty short (less than 6'). It's fine for my day-to-day use and I prefer for turning radius and getting it in the garage.

As far as options, I have the SLT so it comes with most things you would find in a car. The one option I do find pretty handy is the auto folding mirrors when pulling in the garage.

Yes, I would recommend and I would get another.

I went truck shopping with a buddy this past weekend. He's in the market for a basic work truck (2WD, V6, only options he wants is air and auto). Chevy dealer said there's $3000 rebate plus another $1000 for models that have been on the lot for a "while". Having just bought an 05 SuperDuty Lariat, I was in reverse sticker shock. One Chevy he looked at the dealer was willing to sell it for $14,500.

He has no brand loyalty, actually, this will be his first P/U. I didn't steer him in any certain direction either (as far as I could tell). He narrowed down to the Ford and Chevy. He felt the Dodge to be overpriced.

Similar situation here! Except for me if I bought anything but a Ford! My grandfather had a Ford dealership years ago...

</font><font color="blue" class="small">( I've got a '99 Silverado (first year of the current body style) with almost 90k. It is an Extended Cab short bed (6.5') 4WD/Z71. I have the 5.3 V-8 w/ 4 speed automatic, 3.73 gears and a locking differential. I've only had a couple of minor problems with it. Most expensive being a 4wd selector switch at about $40. I've done quite a bit of towing with it and no problems. Even towing 13k a couple of times with it. Power wise was fine, though the suspension bottomed out pretty good w/ that much weight. Now towing Mom & Dad's 32' camper at about 7500#s, you don't even know it is back there. I've haul a lot of gravel/dirt for the house & garage. I will typically get a ton of gravel in the bed and ton on my tiny 2 wheel trailer. It handles all of that weight just fine - wish I could say the same for the trailer. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif We average in the 19 - 20 MPG range of running empty - that is usually 2 adults & 2 kids in car seats.

Thought I would have a response to Av8r2230 heavy foot comment. I'm fairly heavy footed, but the wife is fairly light footed. We do about the same or sometimes mine is a little better. Go figure. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif )</font>



I have the same truck but an '04 and love it. Only thing I would change would be to get a crew cab with the 6.5' bed

If you are going to get one, you might want to wait about 6 months or less. With the fuel peices going up the gulping vehicle prices will drop.
