Lol, I have been running my hounds a little bit since it's hunting season down here and in between putting in no till winter pasture for myself and some customers, today I no tilled in 30 acres of oats to cut for hay in the spring and I have some finish up work tomorrow and then back to my hunting camp on Thursday, I'll be back putting in rye for customer's next week.
I'm also glad you're back Lineman! A question though please, don't the birds just eat all the seed you spread? It would seem that no till just broadcasts seeds across the surface and I'd guess the birds would just love that easy access. I'm probably wrong but I don't see how it gets covered at all? The no-till drill uses a cutting Coulter to cut a slit in hard packed ground followed by a disc opener where the seed gets dropped in to and finally a closing and packing wheel which closes the trench and packs the seedbed giving the seeds good seed to soil contact, the no till part only means that usually no other means of tillage is required prior to planting and there is no broadcasting of seeds, they are all dropped into a trench. My drill is 10' wide and the seeds are drilled on 7&1/2"centers over the 10' width, hope this helps.
What did we do before fEL's? I use cross-ties for gate posts. I remember grunting and groaning standing one up into a hole (W/resulting creosote burns), now with my FEL I use a small chain to lift it up and sit in the hole.Today was gate hanging day, I hung 2 - 12' gates in a 24' opening going into one of my hay fields and a new 16' gate in my driveway replacing an old Rusty falling apart gate and then one more 16' gate going into the field I just fenced off. I forgot how helpful it was to have an extra pair of hands when hanging gates, I usually have one of my 2 boys to help but one now has a full time job and the other is in school, but I improvised and got it done.
Thanks for the explanation Lineman. I now have a clear idea of the concept of no till. I didn't see that the wheels lined up with the coulters, thus "assumed" it was broadcast spreading. Since the seed is going into a trench the birds are not going to be gobbling up the seed! Thanks.

It's all good, that's why we are all here to learn from and help one another, I just got home from the hospital, I had a mild stroke (first for me ) but the only lingering affects so far are left hand and left side of my face is numb, I'm hoping to regain the feeling in both, thank the Lord it was only a small stroke and not a big one, they finally finished all the tests that they did on me today and prescribed several different types of medicine for me to start on, this could have been much worse I am definitely fortunately blessed.
