Got back around to building the customer a limerock driveway today and filled a sinkhole that was about 10' deep, I packed it really tight so hopefully it won't open back up, I forgot to get a before picture but I finished out the week by getting everything done that I had committed to and that seems to go along way with folks.

Very nice looking work on the drive Mr. Lineman!

Is limeROCK just a local name for limestone, or is it a different material?

Thank you Mr Back road, to be honest I know it comes from a limerock pit or quarry and they dig it with a dragline, but I imagine it's just a regional thing as to what it is called, I have also heard it called road base because every highway down in these parts has it under it and it's cheaper than fill dirt, at the pit I think it's $10.50 per ton.

The official FDOT name is limerock road base. It's a very soft rock, with a lot of fines down to powder, and rocks upto the size of about a fist. Depending on the mine, you can get Chert (a flint like rock), some clay mixed in but it is largely just native rock thats dug and crushed. It's soft enough to dig with a drag line or track hoe generally, but it some mines they do limited blasting. When compacted, with proper moisture, it turns into a very cohesive material. It is however very prone to erosion when left bare on a slope. It is also prone to pumping when used in wet conditions, as it absorbs a lot of water. Once compacted well, it's not too dusty.

There is also a kinda different material mined east of him, in Hastings, it's a much more shell based material, with clay, and it's kinda a wet nasty material, but dries out very hard. It's nasty enough coming out that most folks pay to truck and extra 50 miles then use it.View attachment 3370822View attachment 3370823View attachment 3370824View attachment 3370825

Pictures didn't upload, it was just a couple mines in Ocala, FL and another in Newberry FL, and a picture of the product. It's is Not Gravel, and I think that's the big name difference, between lime stone and lime rock.

I got a load of limerock donated to my driveway, and it packed well. It was suggested that once I got it packed, that I buy several bags of cement and spread them over the limerock to prevent washing. I didn't due to the fact that a loaded semi-truck pulls into the driveway just about every time I come home, and I didn't figure a quarter to half inch of cement would hold up very long.
It has faired well, been over 20 years since that load was spread.

I put my own limerock driveway over 20 years ago and it is still in pretty good shape today, I have had several potholes develop in it due to heavy traffic during rainy weather, but the key to keeping a limerock driveway in good shape is when you see a pothole developing is to fill it so it doesn't continue to get worse and you won't have much trouble out of it. With it being cheaper than fill dirt it truly is the best bang for your buck for a driveway.

Been working on invasive tree removal for a customer, China berry and Camphor trees, got them piled in piles to be burned later, a guy with a sawmill came and picked up the large logs and said both are beautiful wood, who would have thought it.
