Looking for pictures of power steering on Yanmar 180, 180D, 187 or 187
D. Need picture of the bracket where cylinder bolts to clutch housing, and where the cylinder attaches to steering arm.

You can either post pictures or email them to me.

Thanks

Surely someone has a 180 with PS:confused:

Eddie,

I KNOW it's possible to add PS to your tractor. I haven't responded because I've been looking for posts that pertain to Yanmar's that have been modified to adapt. I struck out looking for anything that I thought would be helpful (including the Chap that did an excellent job converting to power steering using an outboard steering hydraulic control from a boat).

Making the assumption that you have the existing (maybe aftermarket) hydraulic ram cylinder body and base, and you will be using the tractors hydraulic pump to power the ram then all I can offer is there shouldn't be a problem of fabricating brackets for the ends of you hydraulic unit. Deciding where you want the fixed end, extending and collapsing the ram, while wheels are fully left, and then fully right, will determine where the other fabricated bracket will mount on your drag link. Once you've established that it should be fairly basic about where to tap into the hydraulic line and routing the hoses

I wouldn't hesitate to roam tractor dealer's lots, with a tape measure, pencil and paper (or digital camera) to sketch factory ideas on existing tractors and transfer (convert) those ideas into a functioning unit for your Yanmar.

For now, I'll keep looking for a link that may provide some helpful insight. Hopefully others will chime in that have actual hands on experience or can find related links to aid in your project. Good luck, and don't give up

Eddie,

Found the thread and here's a link which includes great fabrication and excellent pictures (IMHO):

Thanks Mark,

I have seen these pictures. The instructions with my Yanmar power steering kit shows the cylinder attatching to the side of the tractor. I was just looking for good pictures as to how it attatches to the steering arm on the axle. I know I will have to do some modifications but I'm OK with that.

This kit was bought from Len and needed more modification than the guy was willing to do in order to fit on a 1610.

Thanks again

Eddie

Are you mounting it on a Yanmar 180, 180D, 187 or 187? The parts & instructions (20 pages?) came with the kit for those models.

Len,

I'm going to install it on a YM2020. I got the parts list and instructions with it. I got home from Florida Wednesday and had a chance to look at my tractor and the instructions suddenly became a lot clearer. Not sure about the measurements of length of the steering link on mine compared to the 180 but I think I can work that out pretty easy.

You sold the unit to a guy named John in New Mexico in 2005, he was going to install on a 1610 but had trouble with the clutch petal hitting the cylinder bracket that mounts on the clutch housing so he just gave up and sold it.

I plan to get started on it in the next couple of days.

Eddie,

Please post pics of your work on this. I believe there is a large audience interested in the power steering for Yanmars.

Seconded!

Cost?

I once saw a Willys Wagon with power steering moved over to it from a mid-50's Ford. The guy said it was simple. Is there anything we could do like that?

In fact I wonder if there could be a market for a kit.

Power steering is actually a simple concept. Instead of arm power, you simply use the steering box to activate your hydraulic cylinder to push or pull as needed. The actual mounting of the cylinder is fairly flexible as long as the cylinder ram is balanced with the wheels directly centered. You can either have a limit on ram speed to 'assist' or simply use the steering wheel to activate complete power steering. Either way, it's a matter of getting familiar with the changes made. Power 'assist' is the most commonly used and often part of the steering box, but there is no reason one can't activate a ram with the pitman arm for almost complete power steering using a toggle switch. While unconventional, it certainly works just fine.
