With the big storm coming, I hope we get 2 feet of snow like this.

I use my plow for first 3-4 snow events, as by this time all rocks will have been moved. Then blower rest of season unless we get a real wet snow.

I compact the snow down with the tractor tires until a good base sets up. Drifting is bad here so usually I'm forced to use the snowblower to open the roads, but when possible, the plow is way faster and is usually what I use to quickly open a basic path to get to and from work. I'll keep plowing each snow event until the roads gutters start filling up and the drive narrows. Then, when time permitting, I'll blow the gutters out and widen the road and driveway back out. We only have a settled foot right now but most winters we get 4-5ft of settled snow in the yard.

Changed my snow plow wings from bolt on, to swing away. I'm thinking this will be much better than having to remove them every time I want to go from pusher to plow and back again. Now I just need some snow to try it out.

It's pretty simple but took me a bit of sitting and thinking to figure out how it would come together plus it took a while since I did not have the some of the materials I needed. So I had to make them from scrap steel in my junk pile.

I like those ! That's a very clever catch rod that you put on there. Simple to make and simple to use (y)

We are going to be on the warm side of the storm here. High winds with wide spread power outages predicted and rising temps into the 40's tonight and tomorrow with 1" to 2" of rain then a very sharp drop to the low teens or single digits. Roads will be like a bottle.

I tried to widen our road today as much as I could, got to about 1 mile of 1.5 miles of road. I spent about 4 hours on the tractor doing a combination of blowing, pushing and moving back the piles. It was 3 degrees and a nice sunny day, boy I wish I would have gotten a cab! We have some warmer weather this weekend with a chance of rain. I thought I'd do my best widening it now before the wet weather and it turns into concrete berms.

Trying something new this year . I bought a homemade plow setup with a quick attach plate . So far so good . The real test will be after this storm and the high winds that are coming tomorrow. I almost wrecked the plow on the four wheeler last year in 18” of snow . Hopefully this will hold up better.

Does the neighbor think the rocks serve a purpose?
He thinks they add structure to the road / driveway but he uses river gravel from his property and sprinkles that on the base he created, which consists of silt and clay. He might as well be spreading marbles on the road. I've talked to him several times about fixing it but he keeps telling me he has big plans and will fix it soon. I've even, reluctantly, offered to kick in $1,000 to get it fixed but I did not create the problem. He did. We used to share a rock solid driveway that was used by logging trucks but he didn't like it and built a new one to replace it. He just never did it right nor finished it.

It's certainly that plow that I modeled my wings after and maybe it was your old pics that I used. If it was, thank you. :)

I used "river gravel" (We call it pit run.) to build up a low part of our driveway. For about 10 years after I would pull a harrow over it to roll out all the surface rocks every spring. (My boys weren't too impressed with that idea as they got to pick the rocks.) Now we have a really nice solid driveway with no surface rocks.

Pit Run is not the same thing as river gravel. River gravel has been washed by nature and does not have fines to help bind it. Typical road construction consists of; subgrade materials, which are the native materials, then pit run gravel and then crushed gravel, followed by asphalt (if it is for typical public roads). The crushed gravel has fractured faces and good sieve size gradation, which help it bind together. For country roads and driveways the asphalt is omitted and in the right circumstances the crushed gravel could be eliminated too but not in this case and not the way it has been done. He sprinkles small amounts on top of what is basically silt. It doesn't work and he has been doing the same thing for at least 10 years and there has been no improvement.

Turf tires work great with chains.
I find turf tires work great even without chains, at least on asphalt. I buy a new machine every ~10 years, and always go back thru debating different tire choices, before always choosing turf. Then I always buy chains for all 4 corners, as there are rare occasions when I need them, but those chains probably only average one or two uses per year over the life of the machine.

Turf tires on asphalt behind a plow or snowblower seem to grip as well or better than any R1 or R4 I've tried. They suck in deep snow or mud, they load up and become a glazed donut, but that's not a problem when following a plow.

A few days ago it was -18°F. Yesterday it was 47°. Mush everywheres. But buildings at least shed. This was my shop before and after. I have to clear it to allow for further snow. The higher pile tool 23 minutes to clear, the smaller side took 15 minutes. I used to spend hours and hours doing this by using bucket to move than rear blower to blow piles. Could never be done with rear pull style blower. And to top it off it was wet, slushy junk.

Ugg! Our little 6" snowcover got rinsed away last Friday with 3" of rain and 52* and the driveway, at least 1500' of it looks like a plowed field. No time in between mud and frozen solid with an overnight hard freeze.

How did this happen?

Actor Jeremy Renner is in critical but stable condition following a snowplough accident in Nevada over the weekend.

“We can confirm Jeremy is in critical but stable condition with injuries suffered after experiencing a weather-related accident while ploughing snow earlier today,” a spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter late on Sunday night. Renner is receiving “excellent” care, the spokesperson added.

New details are emerging with TMZ reporting that Mr Renner was ploughing the road around a quarter mile from his Nevada home to get his family out after a snowstorm on New Year’s Eve.

The plough, a Snowcat, accidentally ran over one of the actor’s legs, despite a large array of safety features, leading to major blood loss, a neighbour said according to the outlet.

Jeremy Renner on Instagram: "Holiday preparations for friends and family. What are your plans ?? #reno #tahoe #winter #trailblazing"
