Hey there.

So.... Piranha Toothbar or Ratchet Rake???? for my BX-22...... or any other suggestions.

I want to clear some woods of overgrown invasive plants, downed limbs, old piles of wood etc... and also maybe try and smooth out the ruts in my my 1000' dirt driveway. I use a rear blade now but need to roughen it up. I know I should probably get a landscape rake for driveway but money tight and was thinking a toothbar might help.

But anyway what do you think is better between the two styles,,,, looking for some pros and cons on each, Thanks

Which of these would be more useful, if you were doing it by hand?

:)

I have the piranha tooth bar. It works well for back dragging. Never used a ratchet rake.

piranha tooth bar. It stays on the bucket, more versatile without needing to keep reattaching it. The landscape rake is better or easier for collecting or dragging rubbish and your ruts but a box blades is what you're going to get anyway

In the process of building a toothed rake but it will not be bucket mounted, but rather have a dedicated SSQA adapter. Masticate is generally an action associated W/ chewing food, but since tooth bar is noted, perhaps a clever adaptation of the word, or not?

My Piranha tooth bar lives on my FEL bucket; I've never taken it off once I installed it.

My RR lives on the back end of my box blade as an extra 110 lb. weight - after only using it once.

Take that as you will.

How are these Piranha bars wearing?
I have a strange question for those of you with them, I'm thinking about making a sickle cutter for small limb & branch trimming out of a pair of Piranha edges (back to back). One side will be driven hydraulically (slowly) and the other side stationary, mounted on a pole of some sort attached to either the bucket or a separate ssqa plate.
I just emailed them about this and if they would sell a "blank" edge, 6'-7' long to be cut in half for a 3'-3.5' long "cutter".
Any opinions?

I think they wear pretty good, as in they can take a beating. Mine looks new other than some mud in it, about two or three year old

I cannot imagine wearing out a PTB, with a compact tractor. They are pretty tough, and sharp and they are heck on shins, if you aren't paying attention..

Mine has lasted way better than stock bucket edge

That is a very interesting idea! It would certainly make a heavy duty sickle and, I'm guessing, wear very well particularly if the reciprocating speed was kept reasonably slow. Would probably need a fairly heavy duty means of keeping the two blades in contact with each other.
Keep us posted please.

I'm thinking "hold down's" similar to any sickle bar, just on steroids:laughing: and yes a slow stroke of 3-5 seconds ?? each direction. The tractor or SS parked, manipulating the cutter on a 8' ?? boom through the target limbs & branches then re positioning.

Sounds like a small cylinder would work well by reversing the valve for each stroke?

Thanks bikerdib, I need to trim up in the air along my roads through the woods and field edges.

Piranha in my opinion.

Had one on my BX25 and it was perfect.

Bought one for my 2538 as soon as I got the machine.
