Getting back to the CD manual, the 4300 list of parts (per the schematic I attached that was for the 4600), it lists the cap screw on the front with a lock nut (not a locking nut). That apparently is a mistake on the list I attached which referred to the cap screw and a 'washer'.
It appears to be a way to tack up back lash, or slack at the pinion end of the drive shaft, but until I check with the mechanics, I will not know for sure. It has eluded me so far in the service manual. Seems to skip around this feature.
Will persue it some more.
