Well, not exactly pizza, but sandwiches. It doesn't happen often but we had delivery last night, 5 miles from town delivered with a smile. My wife had the check and tip all ready out so when the guy came with the goods, all I had to do was make the exchange. But when I sat back and thought about it, how does this guy not lose his shirt (or car, for that matter)?? The fuel prices must be killing him, and I would hope the sub shop must give him a couple of bucks per delivery to use his own car, but how in the hill can he possibly be making money??!!

Survey Question: For those of you lucky enough to live in the country and still receive delivery, how much do you tip?

I am fortunate enough to know an owner of a pizza and sandwich shop 9 miles away, the closest anything for me. He and I came to an agreement for his employees to deliver out here. He recomended I just ask the kid delivering what he thought it was worth for him to deliver to me. I was a bit skeptical but it is working well, in all cases I would have tipped more than they asked and still do. Not one time has any of them tried to take advantage of the arrrangement as I'm sure they all communicate with one another. If my wife and I are to lazy or our schedule got mixed up to prepare a meal and we order 25 bucks worth of food the guy bringing it to us is getting over half of that in a tip and if he or she has no visible nosering, eye pierced or tattoo in plain view and was polite and on time I just double the amount of my order for tip. It's fun to be able to help these kids, my friend that owns the joint says the drivers bicker as to whos delivering out here because of their good tip.

Good Afternoon davitk,
Well we get delivery sometimes at our Ct home, still considered country by some, but at our Vt home forget agout it ! ;) We allways give a $3 or $4 dollar tip, so I have to figure that the delivery guy is getting 4 or 5 deliveries to do per hour. Im guessing he can easily pickup an extra $15 bucks an hour just with tips alone plus what the pizza joint is paying him !

I wouldnt want it as a carrer, but some easy money a few nights per week !:)

Pizza is one of my favorite food groups.
About 15 years ago, I delivered for a small pizza place and before that I worked for one of the national chains.
In those days $2 was a good tip, and the few $5 tips we got were considered outstanding. As a matter of fact, if I know you were a good tipper and I had several pizzas to deliver, you got yours first, regardless of what order the calls came in.
On the flip side, there were some people on the extreme edge of our delivery area (5-6 miles one way), who would say "Keep the change" after handing you $16 for a $15.85 order. This ensured that the change got thrown at you, with a polite "You need it more than I do", and a healty stripe of rubber got left in your driveway in the hopes that you never called again.
On a good week at the national store, I could bring home a little over $200 in tips working three nights a week, not bad considering I only brought home about $250 at my full time job.

Nowadays, we live too far out to have delivery, but with the price of fuel being what it is, a $5 tip may not be enough.

I think we are down to two shops that will deliver here. Two of the others cut their routes down I suposse due to fuel prices. One just got tired of me complaining when my pizza was an hour late, so I got on the black list and they won't deliver here anymore.

Now our favorite place has it here in 30 mins or less and they get tipped good and they know it. So I think we're first on the list even though we are the farthest away. They charge a delivery fee, but also get an additional $5-8 depending on the order.

The other place gets maybe $5 if they get it here in an hour.

If I could ever figure out how to deliver pizza to Navy ships at sea, I would be king of the mountain! Those pizza chain trucks line up at the pier when ships are inport.

In my best Montgomery Burns voice,
"Here's a shiny quarter- now run along like a good fellow."
Unless you're way out, $5 seems fair.

I wonder how many people on here know who Montgomery Burns is:)

We usually round our food up so if it is a $23 order we just give the driver $30. We are only a few miles from the pizza shop and on a main road so it isn't too big a hassle for the drivers but still easier then for me to run to town, find a parking spot, get the food and return home.

Closest Pizza hut here ( A 1 fast food place town ) is about 6 Miles & We are outside the delivery area . But the Wife called Them about 6 months ago & They agreed to Deliver to Us If We would make it worth the Drivers time. So We allways slip Them a 20 Plus the order amount , Only seems right to Me at the Prices of fuel these days & They make an exception to the route area . & I,m sure They fight on Who gets to deliver also.

Now if We could just get cable, ,lol .

With all the pizza places in the nearest town, there's not one that will drive the ten miles to my place. No problem to me, because the best pizza in the area is Papa Murphy's, which is more-or-less on my way back from work. I like the take-and-bake idea anyway. It's always hot when we eat it!

The road I live on is the boundry of the nearest Pizza Hutt's delivery area. I live on the right side of the street. We get service. Our neighbor across the road doesn't. He's all the time waiting at the end of our driveway for the pizza guy to drop one off.

I have an idea that they're not making anything off of deliveries this far out, but then again, they make bank on the apartments, patio homes, condo's, ect that are almost next door to their store.

We keep one or 2 of those Pappa Murphy Pizza's in the freezer at all times. Fresh or frozen, them thar is good eatin'!

My son delivered pizza in while going to college. He made fairly good money and always had a long list of girls phone numbers. But that was in a college town. (W Lafeyette Indiana)

When we was in the city we would get pizza delivered. Tip would be $3-5. At least 20%. In the city the kids had to be making decent money since they get deliver to quite a few homes in an hour.

The pizza places are 4-5 miles away. I would assume they would deliver but we have a locked gate they would have to get through so we would have to drive anyway. So we order and pick up.

The town had a Dominos but it went out of business years a go. A new Dominos opened up and seems to be doing well.

We also have a Pizza Hut and small pizza/Italian place. We used to order from the small locally owned place but after they mess up the order AGAIN we had had enough. The local place had hired south of the border people who could barely speak English. There Engliish was as good as my Spanish. The guy who took the order tried to tell me how to order a pizza.

We now go to to Pizza Hut. The know us by name. Pretty much know what we order and actually comment if we get something different. They are friendly, nice, and get the order correct. :D What we expected but did not get from the local place.

I do miss the pizza place back in the city. The cook/owner was from Italy and he made some awesome pizzas. He would also make these things out of pizza dough with stuff inside that were the size of hamburgers. Kinda like a Calzone but different. They were pretty danged good. :D He was always playing around with stuff like this which made it interesting to stop in to see what he had come up with today. :D Real friendly and remembered his Customers.

We try to tip real, real good. It has to be appalling service for us to tip poorly.

Later,
Dan

No delivery for me.

When we lived in the suburbs my father had developed a really good rapport with a local shop owner. There were closer pizza shops, but we liked Sal's pies. My father would order, then immediately jump in his truck & drive over there where they'd spend the next 15 minutes busting on each other & telling stories. Sal shed a tear the day I went in & told him Pop had died. We moved about a year later (& Sal always asked how Mom & my brother were doing before we moved). Shortly after we moved Sal closed up shop.

There's a reasonably good pizza/sandwich shop about 1.75 miles down the road. I've developed a good rapport with them in the last 3 years. It's gotten to the point that, my mother called a couple weeks ago & ordered a couple pies. When the owner (who answered the phone) heard the order he knew who it was for, & said, "(my last name, which is very Italian), right?" Mom was kinda' shocked they knew who it was! :D I walk into the place & they look up & say "(my last name)!" a'la "NORM!" from the TV show Cheers! :D

The BEST Italian food in the area is a place called "Phil's II Pizza & Sub." The reason it's a "II" is because Phil started out buying an old diner on Rt130 in Robbisville NJ that became wildly successful. It was common to see a line 15-30 people long waiting to get in on a Friday or Saturday evening! Word is Phil loved cooking but hated dealing with wait staff & such so he sold the place & let them keep his name & recipes. He then moved outside Allentown NJ & opened up a TINY roadside sandwich shop. The food was, as before, to die for, but the place was take-out only & the building was maybe 15' by 15'. Like I said, TINY!!!!! He built a big building, has half of it for his food prep & a small area of groceries, & rents the other half. It's still take-out only (NO delivery!), still has to die for Italian food, is 20 minutes away & we get food from there about once a month. The best part: You can feed 4 or 5 people to bursting, including dessert, for $35-$40! My favorite was to order veal parm with spaghetti on the side & a salad for about $8-$9 & it would feed my GF & I quite well, leaving a piece of veal for her lunch the next day.

I knew I was frugal but after reading your replies I realize what a tightwad I really am. $20 tips, BAH HUMBUG!!!!!!!

You may not be frugal, you could be correct in your tipping. I have had a lot of help over the years from all walks of life and I will never forget it. I try to return that help at this point in my life whenever I can, in hopes the person on the recieving end does the same when they are able. We need service providers like the pizza man.

Our orders are usually under $25 but if it did come up to close to $30 we would round up to $35.;)
