Luckily no deer around here for a radius of a few miles. It's all open farmland with a few developments going in here and there - minimal cover for them - which is part of the reason it's so windy.

They'll be here sooner or later though, so that's a consideration. Nearer to where I work there are some houses I pass on the way in with arborvitae hedges. They are all stripped up to browse height. Time to thin the herd.

I don't know the deal in Pa, but NY State just came out with the list of trees, shrubs, and ground cover available from the State. Prices are cheap, and the quality of the plants is good, based on past experience.
Do you have a county Soil & Water conservation office in your area? If so, check to see if they offer trees and plants.

RPM, You'll get the best site-specific, on-the-ground information by working with your local service forester. Good Luck and happy planting.

Ahhh! I recall those 6" staples well. Seems I couldn't get enough of them into the fabric patch to stitch it well enough to the ground that my JD445 w/54" mower deck wouldn't suck it right up (ugly mess). I hope you will have better luck, and I will be interested in how well it works for you. Keep us posted, please.

We had a nursery plant a row of leyland cyprus about 5 years ago, although our row is not near as long as you need. We also have a row of arbor vitae that were here when we moved in.

The leyland cyprus have done very well. They were about 4' - 5' tall when they were planted and are now almost 20' feet tall. They handle snow much better than the arbor vitae, which seem to load up and then bend when the snow is heavy and wet. The lc's don't seem to catch the snow.

We lost two of the leyland cyprus due to what we believe was over use of a herbicide by the farmer in the field next to us, although we could never prove it. I cut them down, and the adjacent trees are filling in the open space.

Hey, how about a warning that some grafic thought images may be too strong for some readers and that discretion is advised?

Sorry, I'm emoticon impaired and probably didn't give sufficient clue that my comment was humor in response to your humorous (I thought) description of catching the fabric in your mower and creating chaos akin to a Monty Python's Flying Circus comedy skit. Getting ready to plant some trees for my mom and learned a lot from this thread. At least I know to change my plansthat were to just auger some holes, throw in some bare root trees, backfill, admonish her to water once in a while and drive off into the sunset aboard the Kubota. Maybe I should make a couple passes with a middle buster and auger a hex pattern around the central (tree receiving) hole.

Sorry for any confusion with previous attempt at humor.

That's OK. I figured it was humor, but maybe I #$%%ed somebody off/w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif and didn't realize it.

If you are planting many trees, you might want to check with your county agent. They really helped me. Got me into a state program. We ended up with 2150 trees professionally planted and side sprayed for about $265.00. I didn't have to do any of it, although I went out and helped a little because the forester is a friend of mine. We had a phenomenal survival rate. In the past 10 years only about 50 of the trees have died. I think that's around 98% survival. We were required by the state to either spray the weeds every year or mow the weeds down(our choice) for the first 5 years. Worked out great. Check it out.
