Please explain this difference between diesel and gasoline engines

Most ball bearings are actually metric in size.

Now they are but they were not always.

I was surprised to find my 1976 Honda MR175 had inch-sized main crank bearings. Cost much less from the local bearing supply store than from the Honda dealer.

Did they happen to be "New Departure" brand?
