Plug question

   / Plug question #11
A 50 am plug will always be 220v. Just make an adaptor, with the NEMA 14-50 plug on one end, and the NEMA 6-50 reciptical on the other end, I did this for my welder, but used a dryer plug, and a 25 foot piece of 4 gauge cable.

NEMA 5-50 is 125v, 50A rated...

I would agree with making an adapter. I would not replace the plug on the welder, should you need/want to use it elsewhere, where a standard welder outlet is present.

many good replies here, but you really gotta look at your breaker panel. what does the rv breaker say for amps? if you look inside the panel, no need to touch anything - just look, do you have 2 hots coming out the RV breaker?

Stravis- I hope you are not thinking of disconnecting the neutral from the panel unless you plan to get rid of the RV plug. What you should do is NOT connect the neutral FROM the RV plug receptacle when piggybacking. Will your folks still use the RV plug ? will you use welder while RV still using power?

Will cost a few bucks. $35-50 for 2 ends and about $2 per foot for wire. A 25' cord when finished could cost nearly $100.

Hmmm I didnt know about the NEMA 5-50.And also, if you make an extension cord, use as heavy as possible. I used 4 gauge for my 25 foot cord, got the cable for $30 (due to a mistake by the new guy at the cable shop), overkill is always better.

Thank you all again very much. I intend to make an adapter extension cord for it. I will check the panel for two hots before I do so. I've put another RV plug in another field on the property for my folks so that they could have some privacy on their extended stays so they don't use the outlet any more. I'll leave it as is just in case, though.

Expect to get several questions from me in the coming weeks as I attempt to teach myself to weld. Hopefully I won't wear y'all out.
