Coming along good. Any concerns with the bark still on and bugs?

As long as I keep things dry I hope that it will out last me! All of my rock "footings" have the sills and poles at least 8" from the ground. I also kept my overhangs wide to protect everything under them.

Sounds like you took all the prudent precautions you could:thumbsup: Not having any Beech around here, i just always assumed it to be a softer wood.

This looks like a really fun build. The combination of old and new methods is interesting.

Thank's for putting this up, these techniques would work for a woodshed.

I've had the building done for a little less than two years now and I haven't had any significant bug problems. I'm posting how the build went as I dig up photos and remember what I did! Peeling all those poles would be a big job so I decided to skip it. I did build a playhouse for the kids using the same ideas. We have these horntail bugs that plant eggs under the bark. As the grubs grow they chew the underside of the bark and spew little piles of sawdust. From everything I've read they go away once the wood seasons and don't come back. They don't do much damage but little piles of saw dust are annoying if you're camping in the playhouse. I'd peel anything you're gonna live in.

Building like this wasn't my idea. I'm doing it a bit different but I got most of my inspiration from this Maine farmer who builds all of his outbuildings this way. He thinks peeling the logs makes little difference. He's got lots of more building details at his web site.

I finished up the roofing and siding and ran electricity. I went inside and built storage shelves and a workbench.

I had salvaged some metalbestos type chimney about a year previous without an idea what I could use it for. I welded up a small wood stove out of a couple of expired 20lb propane tanks. Heats things up nice and I can put it out of the way during the summer.

Chris, I'm getting the sense that you're a real craftsman. Very impressive.
