I think 6x6's would work fine but I was curious as to why you andted 16' high walls??? Just for horses and then later a garage, wouldn't 10-12' be pleanty??

Maybe he has a new breed of horse that's really really tall.

I agree that 16' walls is pretty high for a 36x36. Unless he plans on putting a loft in it.

I am seeing more and more polebarns using the 2x6 sandwiched method for the posts these days. You can't seem to get solid 6x6 posts over ten feet long that at least 20% don't twist like a pretzel.

I figured at 16' high I could stack my round bales three tiers high if I decided to use it for hay storage later. Or when I upgrade my trator I wont ever have to worry about it not fitting through the door, or if I want to put a vehicle lift in and put my one ton truck on it and raise it 6' in the air to walk under I will still have plenty of roof clearance.

I am very interested in the 8' lamintated post construction method, then what does one do? turn the purlins perpindicular to the roof line and run them like beams on 2' centers?

Does someone have pictures?

But just for an example, back on grandpas farm, he had a morton barn built ~20 years ago. It's 40x80 and 16' high walls (combine storage). Posts are 8' OC and are made up of 3 2x6's (which only measures 4.5" x 5.5"), with the trusses setting on top of each post. (sandwitched between the 2 outer 2x6's).

The building has stood for 20 or better years and still looks good. I live in Ohio and we do get some decient snow loads too.

I'd say, if you get 8' OC trusses, then set the posts 8' appart. This will also reduce the size of header board that you need.

And if the width could be changed to 28' it will change the truss structure dramatically. Just add to the length to make up the sq. ft. if need be.

The neighbor kid built his own poles on the Morton design with the trusses on top of the poles. Makes truss installation a snap. Notice the roof purlin clips that were attached by the truss construction company for ease of purlin install.

6x6's should be fine but you are going to need an adequate footer under them. If it were me I would do a 24" diameter by 10" thick footer for each post.

I am not sure what you mean about the purlins. They run just the same as any other purlin, parallel with the ridge line, on 2' center (depending on metal), and standing on edge (2x4) if spanning 8'. If you happen to only get 4'OC rated trusses, you will still need a large header board to support the trusses in the middle, but you could lay the purlin down to give more room for error when putting roofing on.

As to the post construction, Obviously the 2x6's in the ground are PT and rated for ground contact. Once above ground, you can use just regular construction 2x6's. That usually makes them cheaper than 6x6's that are PT'ed all the way up.

You may have to do some reading as I am not sure of the measurements of how they stagger the 3 2x6's, or how many nails they use etc.
